There was a serious commotion as the plan went into effect. One guard was focused on the cab of the van, shouting, "what the hell's going on?" The other guard spoke over him as the sight of a body being unloaded was immediately recognizable for what it was. Or was it? Taylor: CH Estimate 2/3 Actual: 2 Roll Passed. Amelia: CH Estimate 2/3 Actual: 1 Roll Failed. As the two women carried the dead tetrian officer out of the back of the van, the two guards on duty were initially distracted by the corpse, taking their hands off their weapons in the rush to investigate. Only as they closed in did they notice Amelia struggling to carry the body's weight, and in that brief moment of shifted focus they realized that that the two officers carrying their fallen comrade weren't officers. In fact, they weren't even tetrians! "Hey-" one cried out, just as a shot rang out from the cab, shattering the passenger-side window. Rask: 8 x Malevolence(x2) = 16 DMG The shot impacted the leg of first of the two tetrian guards, who had been drawing his pistol against the two humans. He dropped onto his knee, groaning as he searched for the source of the attack. Meanwhile, the second of the two guards had already gotten his sidearm out and fired nearly point blank at Amelia, whom he had initially been focused on. Second Guard: 5 x (No Feat Applicable) = 5 Amelia: DEF = 5 No Damage. At the last moment, Amelia turned and dropped the body, and the bullet managed to pierce through her clothes in two places without ever hitting her. She grabbed her own weapon as Taylor did the same, gaining the chance to fight back. Meanwhile, the kanads standing at the entry of the building now got into position to fight as well, prepared to use their rifles. --- Vakarus: CH Estimate: 4/5 Actual: 1 Roll Failed. The flak bursts missed their mark, and as the missile left the tube on the top of the ship, the drone had closed the distance enough at low altitude that it was within the arc- that is, the missile couldn't turn in air fast enough to intercept it. Neasha pulled left on the stick, only to see the drone turn towards the craft. Unlike the previous drone, this one was being guided by remote control, and was being used to attack the ship directly. Neasha scarcely had time to react. "Woah-!" The drone crashed into Muramasa from the front and tumbled as it disintegrated, leaving a gash in the side of the vehicle. "Oh, fuck you!" Neasha spat. She hadn't even raised the shields on the ship because it was not yet facing an armed vessel. The ship's monitoring system reported minimal damage, but a more direct hit could have slammed into the bridge windows. "Yuga, help me find a place to land this thing," she ordered as she turned the vehicle back around and sped away. Before Yuga complied, she checked the radar for any additional drones, even if kanad operators were flying them at low altitude in an effort to avoid detection just the same as the Muramusa. CH Estimate: 7/10 Actual: 7 Roll Passed. Nothing else was in the immediate vicinity, it seemed, and a lucky bounce off a nearby steep embankment of the opposite valley allowed the computer to see around the landscape much like a person viewing into an obscured room using a well-placed mirror. Yuga could be fairly certain there were no more drones. "They're really after us, Rask," Neasha warned over the comm. She received no response; it appeared Rask was busy.
Taylor drew her .357 from the holster on her hip, cocking the hammer back as she raised it. She had trained for shit like this for years. Short to Medium range combat. The revolver came up, the sights glowing a bright green as they lined up with the second guard's head. A moment later, she pulled the trigger.
Abrax immediately came into action and saw one of the officer holding his weapon. He used Annabelle and fired a dart at whatever guard that came closer.
Silvia quickly drew her bow and aimed at one of the guard's head. "Hold still!" She yelled as she released the bow string, an electrostatic crackle is heard as the bow produced a hot pink bolt of plasma. ((Not flying during attack))
(( Snip ))
Amelia jumps back from the officer's gun in the nick of time, her heart's racing from the near miss. She falls to the ground, whips out her pistol, and fires one shot at the officer's arm that's holding the gun in an attempt to disarm him.
Despite it's earlier protest to the operation, something within the grizzled Sanghvi felt compelled to see through this mission to confront this Sidikan. The one in charge of this band of various criminals and renegades, was now constantly on it's mind while it waited for the imminent engagement to commence. Jag was able to eventually focus on the matters at hand rather the future. Waiting the opportunity to revel itself as the two volunteers exited the Van in haste with the body. Jag looked around briefly for anything of use before finding an belt of smoke grenades hang on an weapon rack.
As the two women carried the dead tetrian officer out of the back of the van, the two guards on duty were initially distracted by the corpse, taking their hands off their weapons in the rush to investigate. Hopefully throwing off their aim as the smoke engulfs the font of the building. The Sanghvi then begin to dash to the nearest cover, being that of an parked squad car as the tetrian stood just out of it's range. Jag would only be serving as an prime target to unleash lead into if it attempted an charge at him at this moment.
(so is Owen currently involved in any action? Sorry, been busy doing stuff).
"Kniz!" Scum! "Our opponents do not fight as true warriors, it appears." Said Vakarus after slamming his armored fist on one of the armrests on his chair.
Taylor: 8 x Versatility(CH1/4, 2, Failed, x1) = 8 DMG In the chaos of the moment, the second guard ducked just enough for Taylor's bullet not to spill his brains, but it still struck him before he could attack Amelia again. What appeared at first to be a grazing hit was actually more serious; the bullet impacted his cheekbone and fragmented, causing a bloody mess. However, the officer is still in the fight. Second Guard: 10 x Crit(Invalidated Due to Willpower, x1) = 10 Taylor: DEF = 5 5 DMG Taylor HP: 95 Spinning around in terror and desperation, he pulls the trigger while stumbling backwards and the bullet only grazes Taylor's shoulder. This does very little to harm her as he trips over Amelia and lands on the pavement. Jag: CH Estimate: 4/5 Actual: 1 Roll Failed. Jag sprung out of the van, hurling the belt in the direction of the kanads. Unfortunately, one of the kanads, a female as opposed to her male comrade, reacts very quickly upon seeing the smoke trail and deduces what had just been thrown. Leaping forward, she seizes the belt off the ground and throws it away from the fight altogether. Female Kanad: 3 x (No Feat Applicable) = 3 Jag: DEF = 5 No Damage. Having thrown the belt out of the way, the female kanad tracks Jag's movement towards cover and attempts to get a shot off. However, the plasma impacts the car instead. Jag escapes unharmed. Rask: 3 x (No Feat Applicable) = 3 DMG Having watched Jag's maneuver and realized that he wouldn't be able to close on the kanads without cover, Rask changed targets to the female kanad to distract her. With his OBV, he dealt a glancing blow to the enemy kanad's shoulder, which was well protected. Male Kanad: 4 x (No Feat Applicable) = 4 Rask: DEF = 5 No Damage. The male kanad now enters the fight with a shot on Rask, who is still inside the cab of the van. The male kanad hits the door instead, leaving Rask unharmed. Amelia: CH Estimate: 2/5 Actual: 3 Roll Failed. 3 x (No Feat Applicable) = 3 DMG Frightened but not shaken, Amelia fires her X-2 pistol in an effort to disarm the second guard before he can regain his senses. Everything was moving so quickly at close range, however, that she missed his hand and instead grazed the Kevlar vest covering his chest. Silvia: 6 x (No Feat Applicable) = 6 DMG Silvia would have better luck, however, shooting plasma from her bow at medium range while the second guard was on the ground. "Hold still!" She shouted; the officer's arms shot up to guard his head and they took the impact equally, practically bursting into flames. The second officer screamed and rolled onto them, trying to contain the burning and preserve his flesh. Abraxas: CH Estimate: 1/6 Actual: 4 Roll Failed. Attempting to hit the first officer, who by this point had regained his senses and was aiming for Taylor, Abraxas fired a knockout dart, which hit its target but became embedded in the officer's Kevlar. This shifted the fist guard's attention. First Guard: 8 x (No Feat Applicable) = 8 Abraxas: DEF = 5 3 DMG Abraxas HP: 47 The officer's bullet nicks Abraxas in the upper leg but does very little damage.
Taylor reacted to the round grazing her shoulder, flinching a bit. "Fuck." she muttered, as she looked down it. Lucky miss, and right between the riot gear's shoulder joint. She shifted her attention back to the battle, aiming at the first guard nearby (as the second one was now rolling about nearby on fire.) She took aim, and fired a round from the revolver at the man's other (good) leg. Should blow his knee joint out if she can land a good hit...
Yuga looked over the map to find a suitable place to put the craft down on. She located a narrow, deep gulch that seemd to be wide enough to conceal the ship. She turned to the comms "Engineering, we have minor hull damage. Check the systems." "Serek, this location should be adeuate" she communed as she transfered the coordinates over to the pilots terminal.
Spinning around in terror and desperation, he pulls the trigger while stumbling backwards and the bullet only grazes Taylor's shoulder. This does very little to harm her as he trips over Amelia and lands on the pavement.
Amelia grunts as the officer falls down on top of her. Then, after an awkward moment of physical contact, she wraps her arms around the officer's neck in an attempt to choke the officer unconcious. She hides her head behind the officer's back, just in case he tries to get a shot off behind him.
Who knows if I'll need it, though. Brought my own pistols on board
"Well, we put them there just in case. You never know what might happen on this ship." As soon as he finished saying that, the ship started moving and performing evasive maneuvers and the explosion from the destroyed drone could be heard. A few seconds later Yuga's voice could be heard on the intercom.
Engineering, we have minor hull damage. Check the systems.
"See what I mean?"
Jag turned it's attention towards the Kanad solider that had to fire off several bolts of plasma at the Sanghvi while finding cover, now Jag turned to the other side of the squad car to line up it's sights with it's target. The Sanghvi then begin it's sprint towards the Kanad, dashing from cover to cover of whatever that laid between them until finding it's striking point. Leaping towards the black fleet trooper with it's tentacles ready to grapple the Kanad to ground.
Taylor: 6 x Versatility(CH1/4, 4, Passed, x2) = 12 DMG Having reevaluated her targets, Taylor decided she would incapacitate the tetrian that Rask had already shot in the leg. Despite the chaos, her concentration paid off and she was able to land a direct hit to the knee of the enemy officer. For the second time, he screams in pain and falls to the pavement, this time removed from the fight entirely. Enemy Neutralized. Amelia: 5 x (No Feat Applicable) = 5 DMG Acting instinctually, Amelia latched onto the second guard while he was still writhing from Silvia's attack, grabbing hold of his neck and choking him. Although he is physically stronger than Amelia, he's unable to gain leverage on her as he forces himself onto his feet, throwing wild elbows which fail to land. Finally, he makes a decisive, desperate move to break free. Second Guard: 9 x (No Feat Applicable) = 9 Amelia: DEF = 5 4 DMG Amelia HP: 96 Having gained a strong footing, he suddenly pulled forward, hoisting Amelia briefly into the air before jumping backwards. Amelia is unable to support his weight and trips, releasing him reflexively as she tried to catch herself. She hits the pavement and springs back to her feet, adrenaline coursing through her. Aside from some pain in her tailbone, she is mostly unharmed. Meanwhile, Jag charged at the female kanad trooper, attempting to be evasive by running serpentine, in and out of cover. Jag: CH Estimate: 2/5 Actual: 2 Roll Failed. However, the female officer had never taken her eyes off him. Once he had presented himself, she had the initiative. Female Kanad: 10 x Crit(CH1/2, 1, Failed, x1) = 10 Jag: DEF = 5 5 DMG The plasma burst from her OBV hit Jag in one of his tentacles, briefly slowing, but not stopping him. He leaps into the air to unleash a diving melee attack. 8 x Dismemberment(CH1/2: 1, Failed, x1) = 8 DMG Jag tackles the armored kanad and they tumble to the ground. One of his bladed appendages tears through the plate armor on her left arm and cuts into the flesh below, much to the kanad's dismay. "Rah! Akha kisk!" Fuck you! Her voice is tinny and distant inside of her helmet. She calls for her comrade's help. Male Kanad: 2 x (No Feat Applicable) = 2 Jag: DEF = 5 No Damage. The male kanad, having originally lined up another shot on Rask, panicked at the sound of his comrade's distress. He changes targets and fires off another round, but misses the sanghvi completely. The female kanad remains entangled in Jag's grip for the time being. Having totally failed to intervene, the male kanad was now totally vulnerable to Rask's next attack. Rask: 4 x (No Feat Applicable = 4 DMG Rask fires and hits the male kanad in the hip. Most of the plasma dissipates harmlessly against the armor, but a small black mark left behind denotes a burn hole which reached the kanad's leg, dealing a 1st-degree burn. --- Neasha quickly landed the ship at the location identified by Yuga. Sighing with a mixture of relief and frustration, she tries again to contact Rask. "We just landed; no sign of the Black Fleet yet. What's your status?"
We're neck deep in this horseshit, can I call you back, sweetheart!?
Neasha looked back at Yuga, sensing apprehension from the ayr. Neasha chuckled. "They're fine. It takes a while to learn the tone of his voice, but believe me when I say he's got it under control." Neasha turned back to the console and hit the comm button again. "Copy that," she replied to Rask. "Try not to drown in it, now."
The iron sights on Taylor's revolver turned red as the guard screamed and hit the ground. She then shifted her attention back to the second officer, whom was now focused on Amelia. She aimed at the guard's torso, and the revolver lit up green again. A moment later, she pulled the trigger once more.
Taylor: 9 x Versatility(CH1/4, 2, Failed, x1) = 9 DMG The second officer was no longer armed by this point, having dropped his pistol somewhere in the midst of putting out his arm-fires and struggling for air against Amelia's strangulation. As soon as he was free from the biologist's grasp, he turned to find Taylor's sights trained on him. He scarcely had time to react, he shouted "no!" as his arms came up and he looked away. Luckily for him, Taylor was aiming at his chest, where he was most protected. Taylor pulls the trigger, sending a round directly into the tetrian's Kevlar vest. The bullet failed to penetrate, but the force transfer caused by the bullet striking him directly and deforming was enough to drop the officer onto his back, his already shallow breath knocked out of him. He passes out. Enemy Neutralized.
The revolver's iron sights glowed red once again, causing Taylor to smirk. She glanced over at Amelia, then around toward where Jag and Rask were engaging the kanad officers. She replaced the three spent rounds in the revolver, then flicked the cylinder back into the weapon before taking aim at the male kanad's head. The revolver lit up green once more. Ready to fire. It then sounded off once again as Taylor squeezed the trigger.
Yuga takes out her compass and absorbs some vapors. She looks at Vakarus and Neasha, "This plan should have been better formulated. But we've managed to get this far, which means we can anticipate our next moves according to what unfolds." She put away her compass and reached for the comms "Engineering, I want that systems report now." She looked up to Vakarus again, "If they delay further I expect you make the analysis" she said in a calm tone.
Jag continues it's wrestle with the kanad onto the ground, trying to keep the target pinned in it's grip. The scorched limb did nothing to halt it's attacks and movement. The Sanghvi takes an spit-moment to line it's eyes up before raising it's arms above the kanad. Keeping kanad locked under it's tentacles as it's prepares to stab through the soft-carbon's shoulder blades with both of it's long bladed limbs. After an second of thought, the Sanghvi begin it's strike without hesitation.
Smiling at how the second guard went up in a colourful display of pink plasma, Silvia shifted her bow on the kanads Jag and Rask were engaging and streched the bowstring again. "Steady, steady." She muttered to herself, before releasing the string aiming at the female kanad. ((How many enemies do we have?))
Vakarus nodded. "While you are not one of the leaders of this warhost, I will honor your request Yuga'ayrin."
Yuga replied with a nod, "Your willingness to follow reasonable directives have been noted and respected."
((@M. C. There are currently two enemies, both kanads. The male kanad is on his feet, while the female kanad is being thrashed by Jag.)) Taylor: 7 x Versatility(CH1/4, 1, Failed, x1) = 7 DMG Squeezing the trigger, Taylor intended to hit the male kanad in the head. The bullet reached its mark, but was deflected off the shallow slope of the armored helmet guarding the soldier's head. Nontheless, the impact was quite painful, and she succeeded in drawing the kanad's attention. Male Kanad: 9 x (No Feat Applicable) = 9 Taylor: DEF = 5 4 DMG Taylor HP: 91 Pulling his own trigger, he sent a stream of plasma in Taylor's direction. It clipped her, briefly igniting her clothing. She stops the fire from spreading by smothering it, but receives minor burns in the process. Meanwhile, Jag continued to attack the female kanad. 8 x Dismemberment(CH1/2, 2, Passed, x2) = 16 DMG Rearing up, the sanghvi put its weight into his next strike, his limbs crashing down on the kanad's shoulders like a pair of battle axes. The force was enough to split the armor like a can opener. The kanad shrieked as the sanghvi's limbs reached bone on both sides. Incredibly, however, this was not enough to incapacitate her. Female Kanad: 3 x (No Feat Applicable) = 3 Jag: DEF = 5 No Damage. Struggling, she managed to get a leg loose and pulled it up to her torso. She then kicked as hard as she could at the sanghvi, trying to get separation. However, the sanghvi is too close for her to extend her knee and she is unable to transfer the force from her hip. The kick lands, but does nothing to deter the sanghvi. Unbeknownst to her, another foe was taking aim at her, an en'jyrl with a plasma bow. Silvia: 4 x (No Feat Applicable) = 4 DMG What could have been the final shot misses the kanad's head narrowly and instead hits her heavily-damaged right shoulder armor. It was becoming difficult to aim at the unfortunate trooper while Jag continued to tear at her, and so Rask decided against finishing her off himself and focused on the male kanad instead. Rask: 8 x (No Feat Applicable) = 8 DMG Rask's shot hits the male kanad in the chest, where he is strongly armored. A distant voice within the helmet groans. The kanad knows that he can't win this fight alone, and formulates a plan. He turns around, dashing toward the doors of the police station and kicks them in, revealing a makeshift barricade made of desks, currently manned by a group of three tetrian officers. The kanad leaps over the barricade and quickly takes up position behind it. Enemy Repelled. Having pushed the enemy back into the building, the crew of the Muramasa now closed in on the only foe who had yet to surrender or die. The female kanad, horribly injured, had not taken any injury to her head or vital organs and would likely survive if released. "Hold it, Jag, don't kill her just yet!" Rask called out as he exited the cab of the van and trotted over toward the building. "Spas, vikdokri!" Hey, whitejacket! "[We're looking for Yanim Terika; did she come through here?]" "Vok!? [I don't know! Get off me!]" "[Oh, you'd know.]" Rask replied, shaking his head. "[How many kanads come through this station? The whole force is out waiting for our ship in an empty field. You know who I'm talking about. Where is she?]" "[We don't handle arrests,]" the tinny voice answered, referring to the Black Fleet troopers. "[We just guard the front doors, rah!]" Rask grimaced. "[Whatever.]" He looked over at the rest of the crew. "Do what you want with her." ---
We're almost inside the station, Neasha. They're dropping like flies. We still haven't caught Yanim's trail but I think we're close.
Vakarus started to run diagnostics on the weapon systems while also initiating a full scan of the Muramasa's offensive and defensive systems. As the scan began, he glanced at a second screen to his right showing news from the galaxy. Currently a special documentary from the Sol Reporting Network. While the channel mostly focused on things going on in the Sol system, Vakarus didn't mind. He found the humans of Sol interesting. During his first year with TBC he had learned from Rask that Yanim had once known a human of Sol, he had also learned that should he ever bring up the subject he would get stabbed in the face. Regardless, he enjoyed the daily reports as they had taught him alot about politics. Should he ever return to Adanis it would be beneficial for both the Vakr and Gad'r to have a similar political system. Right now however this particular report was not about politics but about military matters. On the screen was a woman identified as SRN reporter Kara Valdez standing next to a man in uniform. He had a pouch-like hat resting on his head. Alex had informed Vakarus that it was called a beret and that it was a old terran headpiece often worn by military officers. Despite its purpose and status, the design amused Vakarus. The man himself was well-built despite appearing to be in his late fifties. A trimmed beard covered his jawline, chin and the area around his mouth. Several medals were strapped on to his uniform. Vakarus turned on the volume high enough so that he could listen without disturbing the others on the bridge. "... Thank you John, now, I'm currently standing outside the SDF shipyards on Terra. I am joined by general Kaspar Cross, thank you for agreeing to meet us general." "The pleasure is mine Miss Valdez." The reporter gestured towards something in the background, as the camera refocused briefly it was evident that a large object filled most of the rear scenery. It was a ship. "Now general, behind us is the SNV Sol, correct?" Kaspar nodded. "That's correct, ma'am." "Can you tell us about this extraordinary vessel? What is the purpose of this ship?" Asked Kara. The general smiled and adjusted his stance. "The SNV Sol is going to be our biggest flagship yet. While we might be at peace as of now, there's no doubt that galaxy is getting more tense for each day that passes. Following the downscaling of the UGC, it is now up to us ensure proper security for both Sol and those colonies that we have vowed to protect. As you know we've been busy for about two years now with the Guardian Project meant to further improve our fighting and defensive capabilities. The SNV Sol along the upgraded weapons, armor as well as the recently unveiled TIGER force are good examples of how we will ensure stability for generations to come." The reporter nodded. "That is without a doubt a important mission and I know that the people of Sol thank you all for your efforts to safeguard what our ancestors secured. Now, is there any chance that the TIGER force and the SNV Sol share a connection?" "Absolutely, despite its size the SNV Sol is groundbreaking due to the fact that it won't require a massive crew- unlike its sister-ships the SNV Terra and SNV Mjolnir. Improved onboard AI systems and a streamlined design allows the Sol to operate on a minimum of fifty people. While not optimal, combat situations rarely offer prefection so this is without a doubt still impressive. As for the connection, while I'm not allowed to share any details, I can tell you that the Sol will- when it's done- rely solely on TIGER units. The only crew quarters you'll find on this ship belongs to the crew, there is no space for soldiers being transported. Instead we've chosen to make the Sol a carrier capable of deploying TIGER units en masse to the field whenever needed. Three weeks ago most of the system witnessed the undeniable efficiency of these Tactical Infantry & Ground Enforcement Robots during the public demonstration. It is our goal to fill a large portion of the SDF with these units for a number of reasons." Kara looked even more interested as she continued her questions. "What exactly are those reasons general? I'm sure the people would love to know more about these TIGER units, especially since it sounds like they might be replacing the ordinary soldiers of the SDF?" The general shook his head. "Not at all Miss Valdez, on the contrary they will actually boost our ranks by a third. We estimate that in another two years roughly 30%-40% of the SDF will be TIGER units. As for reasons, I could make a list. To begin with, they're expendable. Not in the sense that they're cannon fodder- that would be expensive- but in the sense that they're easy to maintain and repair. Another factor is that they have absolute loyalty, you can even call them brave. So far we've had several successfull exercises and live-action events where TIGER units have worked excellent alongside our regular SDF soldiers. It doesn't matter if they're combat medics, breachers, military riot control, shocktroopers, ammo carriers, scouts, marksmen, gunners or even pilots; they perform flawless. Not to mention all the lives they'll save as the risk of losing a father, brother, mother or sister is eliminated by having a robotic soldier carry out the more extreme tasks in the field." "You bring out alot of good points general. I would love to continue this however it appears that our report is coming to and end, with that said I'd like tot hank you once again for having us and take care." "No problem at all, we're happy to have you here." The report ended and Vakarus shook his head. Lifeless soldiers. He chuckled. How would you be able to enjoy the heat of battle when a robot does it all for you?
Yuga looked over to at Vakarus, quietly reading his mind as he read the news. "The terrans are new-comers to the galactic scene but they are undoubtedly resourceful. Investment in their endevours may even prove fruitful in the future." Yuga zoomed the map out to show the galaxy, and then zoomed in on the Terran sector with it's colonies. "But first they need to secure their own ranks. Having splinter groups such as cults and mercenaries run amok across the galaxy gives the impression of discontent and lack of true unification"
"Owowowow!" blurted out Taylor, as she smothered out the flames that were burning through her clothing. She finally put the fire out, then checked the damage. Minor burns, nothing serious. Shit, that hurt! She looked up and noticed the male kanad had retreated behind a baracade, and the female one was almost done for. "Hey Rask, lets try reasoning with them. All we're here for is information, and we're eating through time just wasting them." "I mean, I'm more than happy to continue putting bullets through bodies, though."
After dealing it's crippling blow towards the kanad, Jag gave an simple nod to Taylor's suggestion and picked itself off from the injured kanad. Quickly pulling blades from the kanad's damaged body. Stabling one of it's tentacles into an non-fatal area of the kanad's lower crest to lock her in place as it rose to face Taylor. Straightening it's stance before the fellow comrade. "Freelancer Taylor; I recommend that you be the first to engage in conversation with the injured soft-carbon below me." Jag said as it took one last look at the kanad, ripping it's tentacle from her crest a moment later. Deciding that the soft-carbon wasn't going anywhere. "I also recommend that you do it quick before the soft-carbon passes out due to blood loss and physical trauma." Jag said as it turned to quickly watch the surrounding primer.
Rask nodded in response to Taylor's suggestion. "Yeah, you're right. The longer we spend punishing these whelps, the less chance we'll have to rescue the Boss." Jag suggested that Taylor should interrogate the wounded kanad, but there wasn't any indication that the kanad spoke English. Rask shrugged, "let her pass out," he said. "She's better off just being a bargaining chip. Taylor, grab that unconscious officer; I'll get the other one." The cops and their single, ineffectual kanad guard remained fixated on the open doors, their barricade bristling with weapons, mostly shotguns. The Department Chief joined them with his semiautomatic rifle. He seemed more fearful than any of his subordinates, and his uncertainty infected the line. Moments later, the light of the doorway was broken by a silhouette, a mercenary, with his arms wrapped tightly around the torso of a wounded police officer and a pistol propped against the officer's head. The policeman's legs were shattered and bleeding, and with each step Rask took that dragged them up the steps toward the entrance, the officer moaned pitifully. "I know who you are," the Chief called out. "You think so?" Rask replied, tightening his grip and forcing the pistol into his hostage's temple even harder than before. Taylor arrived next to Rask, the other officer slumped and unconscious in her arms. "I do," the Chief assured him. "Easy now, you two... we can talk this out. You're here for that Terika girl, right?" "That's right." "Well, we don't have her," the Chief insisted. "I can help you get her, but I won't help you if any of my men die, understand?" Rask remained silent as Jag appeared next, dragging the bloodied kanad trooper with him. "So... uh, why don't you just put those three on the ground, right here where we know they're safe," the Chieg continued. "We'll get our medics on them, and I'll tell you what you need to know." Quietly, so that only Jag and Taylor could hear him, Rask muttered, "If we do what he says, we don't know what he'll do. He might help us, or he might be full of shit. What do you think we oughta do? Take initiative, keh?"
