"So you're the new rookie eh?" Dio remarked as he scanned Johannes from head to toe like an eagle eyeing its next prey.
"Dio Bradley, ex-hitman and now 2nd newest crew member to this ship." Dio extended a hand.
((Gonna post the whole border control thing now as a flashback.))
Above Mars, prior to the Muramasa landing...
As the Muramasa approached the red planet covered with patches of green and blue, forests and oceans created through terraforming, a vessel bearing the emblem of the SDF approached it.
The name SNV Hargeisa was painted at the bow of the ship, lit up by a trio of lights.
Hariim turned to Yuga, Yanim and Rask. "They're hailing us."
Yuga gestured with her hand. "Patch them through Mr. M'baal."
One of the screens changed and showed a man clad in a officer's uniform of the Sol Navy. The blue light on the bridge reflected off of his dark skin.
"Unidentified vessel, this is Captain Amid of the patrol frigate SNV Hargeisa. Due to the hightened alert status currently in place all traffic in the Sol system is to be monitored. Incoming ships are subject to a mandatory search. Should you choose to not comply, my crew and I will be forced to take defensive action to ensure the safety of our vessel and the integrity of our system."
He paused and observed the crewmembers standing on the Muramasa's bridge. "Should you choose to comply, please disengage your engines and hold your current position. You have five minutes."
Yuga and Hariim turned to Yanim, as did Rask. "What's the plan boss?"
Yanim turned to Yuga. "The decision is yours, captain."
Yuga nodded and motioned for Hariim to open up the channel. "We comply."
Captain Amid nodded. "Prepare to be boarded."
-----
The Muramasa's hull was covered in darkness as the SNV Hargeisa docked with the smaller ship. A rectangular airlock connector which connected with the Muramasa's cargo bay doors.
Everyone in the crew, aside from Abrax, Dio, Vakarus and Porter, had gathered in the cargo bay. Abrax had chosen to watch over the wounded crewmembers who, while they were at the last stages of their recovery, should rest for as long as possible. Doctor's orders.
As the cargo bay door opened up, a large airlock tunnel became visible. On the opposite side was the airlock door leading to the SDF vessel which was now slowly opening up. As the doors opened a large squad of heavily armored SDF naval boarding troops.
The squad leader gestured with his hand, prompting the soldiers to calmly appraoch the crew of the Muramasa. Several of the soldiers tightened the grip on their weapons as their helmet scanners identified several suspicious characters among the crew.
"Who is the captain?" Asked the squad leader, seemingly unfazed by the fact that a good portion of the people infront of him were wanted in several different systems, including Sol..
Yuga stepped forward. "Captain Yuga Shuur, at your service." The squad leader nodded as he brought out a datapad from one of his utility pouches. "Are you the registered owner of this vessel?"
Yanim stepped forward. "I am the owner of this vessel, Yanim Terika."
The officer nodded as he wrote down the information on his datapad. "Are there any crewmembers onboard the ship who are unable to attend here due other reasons?"
"Four." Said Yuga. "Our doctor, Abrax, and three other crewmembers who are recovering from previous injuries. They are all present in the medbay."
"Alright then."
He looked up to the two of them. "By entering this system you comply with Sol law and promise to follow them during your stay at any of our worlds. You will also comply to a search which will be conducted by five boarding troopers. The troopers will not move any belongings but may confiscate material they may find incriminating. Video feed and scanning logs recorded by the troopers will be compiled into a main file which will then be archived for possible future use."
The officer paused and observed Valkyrie and Markus before turning back to Yanim and Yuga. "Should this vessel or any of its member be involved in any illegal activity, the archived file may be used in court as evidence against them. Do you understand."
Yuga and Yanim acknowldged.
"Before my men begin their search, do you house firearms or other weapons onboard?"
Yanim nodded. "Yes, most of our contracts involve high risks. We have several weapons onboard alongside facilities to maintain them. Our armorer has the full manifest."
"Alright." The officer turned to the search crew. "You're good to go. Four crewmembers present in the medbay. Weapons onbaord."
The soldiers nodded and boarded the ship. Pointing at the large group of crewmembers the officers barked out a new order.
"Take the rest of them to the temporary holding area."
-----
A few minutes later most of the crew aside from those onboard the ship, Yanim and Yuga were in the temporary holding area. The name was over-glorified as it was more or less a small room beyond the Hargeisa's airlock with two zones marked by painting on the floor.
One zone was marked in yellow which was now occupied by most of the crew who were casually standing on a line with their backs agaisnt the wall. The red zone however was occupied by Markus, Valkyrie and... Jag?
The four of them were under tight watch by six boarding troopers and forced to stand with their hands and faces towards the wall as a seventh trooper frisked them.
With a face devoid of amusement the officer fished out the twelth knife so far from Markus who seemed to be the only one carrying weapons on his person.
Frosty and János were taken to the side as both lacked any kind of ID. The pair of officers questioning them were forced to create completely new ID's valid in Sol and UGC space. Unknowingly Frosty's new ID triggered a silent alarm at the SSOID.
As the yellow-zone group had their ID's checked out, they were each greeted in their own way. Maddox and Taylor were each given a salute and a military welcome. Owen wrote several autographs to a pair of soldiers who had watched the race.
Amelia, Amy and Alex were given a welcome home. Amy and Alex had exchanged some confused looks however when one of the troopers informed them that they had a Sol Free Pass attached to their ID, signed by the Lord General himself.
Having finished their search, the boarding party returned safe and sound. Having not found anything incriminating onboard the ship and since the IDs of the members onboard were green aside from Dio who had a SISP APB on him they went back to report to the officer.
The squad leader looked at Yuga and Yanim, who had gone through the armory manifest and ship registration. "Here's the deal, most of your crew checks out but you have two members with invalid ID's and no memory of their previous origins. You have four members who are wanted by Sol authorities, of which one have already served time in a off-system maximum security facility.
Members Markus Koval, Valencia Blackwell, Dio Bradley and Jag Perditus are wanted and the most logical thing for me would be to arrest them and turn them in."
He paused as he removed his helmet, revealing a scarred face. "But since your team saved my battalion's lives on Zeruel after crashing your ship into the damned abomination of a war mech, I'll let you pass this time. I recommend keeping the aforementioned members on a leash though, as SISP and SIG officers won't be so understanding. The latter will most likely open fire first rather than ask questions."
-----
One of the troopers waved with his hand. "Alright, we're done here. Let them go. Lieutenants orders." The soldiers wasted no time and formed a wall, herding the Muramasa crew back towards the airlock tunnel were they reunited with Yuga and Yanim.
Rask approached Yanim. "We good to go, keh?" Yanim nodded in response.
"Sorry for all the hassle, but you can't be too careful these days. I hope you enjoy your stay on Mars. Stay out of trouble."
With that said the Muramasa crew was allowed to return to their ship and begin their descent to the surface.
Alex remained at the ship after the border inspection. Choosing to tend to his duties on it.
---
Amy chose to go outside and join the rest of the crew, she needed the fresh air and she could probably restock on ammo. Once outside she noticed the lastest addition to the crew. "Hello there new guy. The name is Amy."
"Staying here instead of heading out with the others?" she asked, stopping next to him."
Hariim looks up at Taylor and shrugs. "Usually don't go to port without a buddy, safety in numbers and all that. Never know what lovely lady is gonna spike your drink, 'specially if you're a grunt like me. You heading out someplace?" He asks, pulling up some info on the local tourist traps and restaurants in his entropic display so he has something to process while he waits for Taylor's unaugmented brain to process a response.
"500,000" "New High Score!" the screen flashes on her PC.
"Whoop whoop," Anelia quietly celebrates, waving her hands in the air.
Amelia gets up from her cabin after beating her game... twice. She walks around the ship, placing her fingers on the walls, bored out of her mind. Finally she walks past the new guy. After 5 seconds walking past him, Amelia notices that there is an actual new guy on the ship.
"Oh ummmmmmmm who are you? Are you the newest addition to our team?" She puts her hands together, excited as always.
Johannes glances up at the voice, then once Yuga introduced herself ((himself?)) he snapped to attention, pure military. Bootheels together, duffel bag dropped to the ground, crisp salute with the right hand and his helmet tucked between his arm and the side of his body as if it were a parade cap. "Aye Captain. Johannes Van Der Meijde, Petty Officer 1st Class, Koninklijke Marine 23rd Airborne Raiding Squadron. Formerly, of course." Johannes glances at Dio and nods slightly, waiting for Yuga's reply or dismissal before breaking salute.
Yuga squints at Johannes as he introduces himself.
"At ease. It pleases me to see yet another disciplined individual in our ranks."
All though be it another heavily modified individual. She begins wondering if the human race show this little regard to the dangers of cybernetic modification, perhaps going as far as to actively encouraging it. However, this was neither the time nor place to bring this up again.
"Our resident weaponsmith will assist you in storing your armaments in the armory before our departure."
She turned towards the other crewmembers, "And I sincerely hope someone took some time to prepare a room where our newest member can store his belongings."
And I soncerely hope someone took some time to prepare a room for you where our newest member can store his belongings.
"Someone turned one the rooms next to mine into a sexnasium, judging by the sign. But he can move his things in the other one."
"Usually don't go to port without a buddy, safety in numbers and all that. Never know what lovely lady is gonna spike your drink, 'specially if you're a grunt like me. You heading out someplace?"
"Nah, gonna rest a bit. Jag put me through some hand-to-hand in the armory, so I'm kinda exhausted." she replied. She looked around a bit. "Well, watch your ass if you do disembark." she continued, before waving a hand and walking towards her quarters. She shed her armor there, set the LMG next to her bed, and laid down. Within a few minutes, she had drifted off to sleep.
....
Valkyrie shrugged at Yuga's statement. She glanced over as Amy, Amelia, and Dio came out to greet the new guy.
((Goddamned cloudflare ate my post. I wouldn't care so much except I'm posting on mobile right now. Ffs))
Johannes drops the salute and for the sake of convenience Returns the helmet to his head before picking his duffle bag back up and Hauling it over his shoulder. The vocoder in his helmet would strip away any sign of his Dutch accent and make his voice warbley and robotic (think Combine). "Aye captain. Are there any dossiers available for our next assignment to study? My mission briefing for the contract assigned to me for your vessel was fairly short and nondescript." At this point, Johannes would turn and shake hands with the new crew members that had shown up, introducing himself simply as 'Johannes' for the time being.
Porter wakes up from his quick nap. His cybernetics are fully recharged to their full strength... finally. He walks into the hallway to see everyone greeting the new guy. Leaning against the wall with his arm crossed, he's delighted to know that a disciplined member joined the crew.
((Radley pls. I see you coming into the thread. I'm so bored.))
Yuga took off one of her leather gloves and fished out her compass from inside the coat.
"As of now, there is no information I can give you about our future assignment, as we have landed here to receive the details ourselves. If you really are that eager to know you should speak to our contractor, Yanim Terika, in her quarters."
Yuga used her compass to access the ships intercomm,
"First mate Caine, would you be so kind as to report to the cargo hold and show our new recruit his room."
She released a puff of vapor and it slowly disappeared in front of her face as she absorbed it.
She put away her compass and put on her glove.
"If there is anything else you'd like to know, now is the time to ask. The service crew will be here at any moment and I'm to supervise the installation of the new fuelrods."
Frosty opened up comms to Yuga.
"Excuse me, Captain. Since we are not on a mission at the moment, am I clear for take off? I would like to practice my flying skills some more."
Yuga rolled her eyes as she had just put away the compass, begrudgingly taking it out once more.
"You have my permission, but do clear yourself with the flight control. We're here to be briefed and re-supply, not cause a hassle.
And if I catch wind of you vandalizing more property with your armaments I will have engineering boot your craft until you've managed to refrain from such things."
Johannes shakes his head "No ma'am, nothing else presently. It was a pleasure to make your acquaintance and I look forward to serving under your command."
Frosty shook up after hearing that. Vandalizing? How did she know what he did on Prospera?
"Captain... how did you know that was me?"
There was no way anyone could tell, considering the culprit's name was clearly printed as PBOSTT and not FROSTY.
Vakarus, slightly hunched back due to his injuries, approached Yuga with his staff in hand. He stopped infront of her and rested towards it. "Yuga'atvan, I fear that my wounds will prevent me from moving longer distances. I ask for you to assign me to the defense of our vessel; watching a point of entry is far easier than watching a street."
Taylor sat up with a low groan at the sound of Yuga's voice, and climbed out of her bed. New guy needs showing around. She sighed and departed, arriving at the cargo hold minutes later. She spotted the new guy, and walked up.
"Taylor Caine. First Officer aboard the Muramasa, and Mercenary. Formerly First Lieutenant, SDF Pyri-II Auxiliary Infantry, 1st Battalion, Bravo Company." she said, introducing herself.
"How I know is not important, but the fact that I know should discourage you from further such exploits. Dismissed"
A truck rolled up with the service crew along with the fuel rods.
Yuga lightly tipped her cap to Johannes, then looked up towards Vakaurs, "Our contractor has not yet given us detailed information regarding the next assignment. I see no hindrance to post you here."
She walked over to the truck to discuss the service work and costs.
Johannes turns to Taylor and snaps to attention, saluting her. "Ma'am. Johannes Van Der Meijde, former Petty Officer 1st Class, Koninklijke Marine 23rd Airborne Raiding Squadron. Wonderful to meet another soldier, ma'am. Marines or ground forces?"
Frosty shook his head. Perhaps he ought to try lasering someone else's name instead of his.
Nevertheless, he talked with air traffic control and headed straight for a nearby canyon.
"Ma'am. Johannes Van Der Meijde, former Petty Officer 1st Class, Koninklijke Marine 23rd Airborne Raiding Squadron. Wonderful to meet another soldier, ma'am. Marines or ground forces?"
"Ground forces, though the most I ever killed was pirates." she stated. Valkyrie grunted nearby at the statement. Taylor rolled her eyes, before continuing. "Lets get your stuff put away in one of the rooms. Follow me." she said, before turning and heading back up the cargo ramp.
"Yes ma'am Johannes hiked the bag further up on his shoulder and followed Caine into the ship. "I was mostly deployed against pirates and insurrectionists myself. Protected sovereign Dutch vessels mining and transporting materials in the Kuiper belt back before we found out how to do FTL. Vermaak 88 picked me up after I finished my fourth tour and had me basically doing the same thing but for private companies. Couple of pirate base raids too. Lots of Driller pods, fun stuff those."
Taylor listened to his story, before glancing back at him as she walked. "...how old are you?" she asked, an eyebrow raised. 'Found out how to do FTL'? 'Vermaak 88'? She then shook her head. "Nevermind. You must be another popsicle like one of our other crew members."
"Yes... Vermaak 88 put me in cryostasis back in 2232. They told me it was for a short sub-ftl trip, a year and a half at most. I didn't wake up until six years ago. Not sure what happened. The crew that picked me up found me drifting in wreckage but it wasn't the Vermaak ship I'd been traveling on. Either they lied to me or something went wrong, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter." Johannes goes silent for a few moments, walking alongside Caine quietly before he speaks again. "The captain mentioned I should see the weaponsmith to get my gear sorted. Can you take me there before my berth?"
After shaking hands with Johannes, Amy looked outside the ship. The service men were being a bit slow with the fuel rods, so buisiness as usual. Didn't matter anyway. They would most likely stay on Mars for a while and she could use her time to help the crew. One of the Sister's contacts was on Korolev. Maybe she could get some nice supplies out of him.
She send out a message to the crew. "Heading out to meet with a buddy about picking up some specialized ammo, among other things. Anyone want anything?"
Bucky comes strolling down the way towards the ramp in her customary comfy pink hoodie. She waves at the gathered crew there, and says to Yuga: "Ship is all good, Cap. Trimmed up that startboard-facing ventral RCS cluster and tidied up that processing block that Hariim has been harassing me about. If there's nothing else, I'd like to take some shore leave. Got some acquisitions to make for myself and the ship."
-------------------------------------------
Hariim heads down to the armory to get some more practice with his rifle and sidearm.
Yuga turned her head from observing the service crew to Bucky, her eyes barely showing over her popped collar, "You have my permission. Make sure we are able to reach you in case we require your presence."
...
Markus had been idling in the armory and watched Hariim practice with his weapons.
He leaned against the wall with his arms crossed, dressed in his usual baggy camo trousers, boots and tank top.
He stroked his beard and his brow furrowed sligthly. Right in the middle of fucking Sol.
They better not have anything lengthy to take care off here cause he detested this place.
If he knew he'd end up smack dab in the middle of the pompus Sol system he'd never left Daggers Landing.
"Much appreciated, Yuga'atvan." Said Vakarus before excusing himself. He took up a overwatch position at the top center of the ramp.
