"I can talk to them, but most of them don't talk back. The exile prevents me from returning home, which cuts me off from resources, like armor, guns, my personal funds and a roof over my head. Everything I had up until I joined the crew, I had to get on my own. Granted, they send me some money my way, but it barely lasts a week."
"Seems you were able to do well for yourself in the meantime" Jeb replied.
edit: [I guess the ship and crew are going planetside again.]
After a few moments within the restroom at the bar, the door slowly open, letting out an light stream of liquid that was a mix of water, dirt and absinthe that leaked onto the floor of the bar.
Viper look at an surprised Dwan, who had just finished mopping the last croner of the bar.
Viper did a quick sign before fully opening the door to reveal the mess that the Sanghvi had made.
After standing there for several minutes, Viper walked over to counter, making sure to not make eye contact with Dwan as it put the Sanghvi's payment along with a generous tip on the counter.
He rose up and turned to Yanim. "[Thank you friend, this will serve the crew well. Do you mind if I add my own modifications to the vehicle?]" Said Lion in perfect kanad.
She shook her head. "[Go ahead, everything aside from the propulsion logic sub-board is yours to modify. For safety reasons, throttle response, weight compensation, and maximum thrust are limited to certain design parameters. I know you're capable of doing the math on these sorts of things yourself, but to be fair to the crew I'm making it mandatory that any changes to those factors must be made by the engineering department.]"
((Just as an aside, I had mentioned earlier that the bike would be capable of supersonic speed if not limited, but this was a guess. Bathacker contacted me with the actual math; using the weight of the test sled and the bike to derive the max thrust in pounds, he calculated max speed at 100% thrust: roughly Mach 1.5. :eng101:))
"Seems you were able to do well for yourself in the meantime" Jeb replied.
"I spend a lot of time doing odd jobs. Protection, observing drug deals, breaking up drug deals, pit fighting and my favorite, male escort." The last one he said sarcastically.
Following Yanims response, Lion began working on his ADT. He moved it into the small garage room where the Lynx was located so that he could make use of the variety of tools in there.
After a few hours of work he leaned back and observed it.
Lion had used his scans of the vehicle to mark out key locations where he could adjust the armor plating to something more lightweight, allowing the ADT to carry both Lion and his arsenal.
He had also added a small sensor antenna at the back linked to a screen next to the controls, giving him a small radar.
A small kinetic repeater had been added as well, it feeds off of a separate powercell to prevent a system overload during operation.
Last but not least he had added some equipment mounts which held a trauma kit, some camonetting and a rolled up tent.
Lion had also decided to recolor the black frontal parts into a greyish splinter camo. As he observed the result of his modifications, he sent a report to Yanim.
"Bloody hell.", Dwan thought to himself as he started cleaning up Viper's bar restroom mess. He sees Byron and calls him over to help him.
Squish notices Sledge come in. "Yes, I need you to dispose of these dog-sized fleas I have in these cages." (I hope he doesn't take these fleas and make them into pets)
(I don't know how to do the com message. :P)
Sledge was a little taken aback. "Uh, Squish, isn't there something you want to tell me? Something you'd like to say about my muscles?" He lifted his arms and flexed as well as he could while keeping his balance on his tiny legs.
Jeremy went to the hangar bay, he saw Yanim and Lion working on the ATDs. Since they've already landed on Duroma this would be a good time to get his hoverbike going. He also needed a place for the crew to get RnR. "Yanim, do you mind if I give my ATD a test run? We're already in Duroma and I think we should explore what's out there."
"Just don't break my glasses. Also that is not very good since now you have balancing problems. You might run into me, ewhhhhhhh, and might break my glasses. I guess I should help you. However, these guys need to be dealt with." Squish motions to the cages containing mutated fleas. "I don't want what happened before to happen again."
Viper didn't stand there in font of Dwan for long before taking an nearby mop from the supply closet and helping clean the mess.
After an hour of continued work, the restroom was relatively clean. However Viper had more important responsibilities and gave Dwan an apology for the accident before heading down to the Sanghvi's private quarters.
The room was still quite messy and littered with cutler as Viper left it. After clearing small area and getting it somewhat organized, Viper begin writing down an massage to an nearby Sanghvi sect that operated within this sector.
Viper was fairly hesitant to send it, partly due this sect's underground nature but mostly because of Viper's reputation among fellow Sanghvi.
However, as Viper started viewing this sect's records though the data banks, Viper notice that they were currently on planet for ship parts.
Viper took the chance and begin packung up for an adventure, forwarding the information to Jemery after readying up.
As Jeremy walked into the hangar Lion approached him. After giving him a quick salute he pointed towards the hangar door.
"Captain, are we authorized to deploy the ramp and begin some RnR?"
Jeremy gave him a reassuring smile. "Well Lion, I don't know about you but I think I should force everyone to get some RnR. Permission Granted."
"Yanim, do you mind if I give my ATD a test run? We're already in Duroma and I think we should explore what's out there."
"Of c-course, captain. This terrain is near ideal f-for high speeds, but b-be careful. Valkyrie can save you from free fall, b-but if you fall from the ATD at three hundreds k-kilometer per hour, there is no time to d-decelerate. Prepare to tuck and roll. Survival not guaranteed." She sneered at her own dark humor.
Jeremy nodded at Yanim, activating the ramp, he pulled the ATV to the entrance and began to pull out some mouth covering and goggles. He gestured both to have a fun day and started his engine. He had to admit this was a sick vehicle and he could already feel the intense speed even though he didn't accelerate yet. He pushed the pedal and prepared to accelerate out in the shifting sands.
[editline]13th June 2015[/editline]
Before he managed to speed on out, he quickly forgot to post an announcement, he hurried to one of the nearby intercom in the room. He couldn't wait to explore out there. "Attention Personnel, this is your Captain speaking. We are now in Duroma. As Head of Command I order everyone to have some RnR. You all deserve it, have fun."
Dwan, with Byron and Viper helping him, would eventually finish cleaning up. Viper apologizes for the mess, to which Dwan responds by telling him it's ok. As Viper left, he gave Byron his usual bottle of rum before he leaves too. Dwan goes back to the counter and checks his gear as he hears the announcement.
He pushes the exotic drinks cabinet and gets into his secret quarters. Before anyone notices, he switches from his bartender uniform to a more casual look. He leaves his quarters and pushes the cabinet back in place. He grabs his revolver, puts it in his holster and heads down to the hangar.
Lion brought out a grey cloak/poncho-hybrid which he then decided to wear. It was covering most, if not all, of his body, revealing only his robotic feet and his two blue eyes.
"This sand is going to be painful." He said as he climbed up on his ATD. With a bang he suddenly rocketed out of the hangar bay and out into the scoldering heat.
Quickly adjusting himself to the controls of the hoverbike, Lion began racing amongst the dunes.
He then returned to the ship and parked his ATD at the Lancier's (the rover) flatbed, which he then took on its first official drive.
"Just don't break my glasses. Also that is not very good since now you have balancing problems. You might run into me, ewhhhhhhh, and might break my glasses. Sledge eyed the cages and felt disconcerted. "Ehhhh, do you really need me to do this? Because I'd feel pretty bad smashing something that's just helplessly sitting in a cage."
Hercules clicked a few times.
"Oh. Sure. Do you mind if Herc eats them? He has less of a moral compass than I do."
Pippin had gathered a few things along with some money. He shook his head as he walked out into the hangar. "Hey, anyone know if there's a settlement or something, and how we're supposed to get there?"
Varn heard the announcement and turned to Jeb. "Well, you heard the man. Go get some RnR. Oh and before you go. Thanks for listening." Varn go up from his chair and headed to his bunk. He switched to a more casual appearance. He strapped on a gun holster with a pistol inside, he put a knife in his boot and headed down to the hangar.
Once there he walked over to Yanim while looking at the ATDs. "So, which one of these beauties is mine?"
"That one," Yanim replied, pointing to one of the stowed examples from the first batch, "the f-first one on the left, next to mine. Feel free to r-repaint or modify as you s-see fit." As she reminded herself of her own bike, she smiled at the thought of adding her own modifications.
While other crewmembers gradually made their way to the hangar to exit the ship, Yanim remained temporarily to distribute keys, explain the controls and provide safety precautions, all the while adding her personal touch to her ATD. An extension was added to the rear of the cycle behind the seat, providing room for Skada, while a second compartment was added to the front of the craft between the two control surfaces where her guns could be safely locked away. Now, her forward thinking would come into play, as she installed a cable connection from the ATD's main logic board to the rear compartment, where it could be plugged into her robotic pet.
By using freely-available, open source programming from the net, Yanim was able to "teach" Skada how to operate the bike safely up to a speed of 100 kilometers per hour, aided using a cheap and lightweight sensory package mounted to the bottom of the gun locker up front. Now, Yanim could use her tablet to issue commands to Skada, or even speak them verbally if he was near, to retrieve her bike or deliver it elsewhere, or even to carry a wounded crewmember to safety.
Both additions to the bike were painted in white, but she gave a small amount of flair to the machine with the addition of a thin purple stripe, offset to the left, on the main body of the craft.
As Lion went for a drive with the Lancier, he spotted a perfect hill from which to set up an observation point.
He parked the rover and exited it.
His eyes zoomed in as he scouted the surroundings. He spotted what appeared to be a smaller settlement wkth several smaller ships parked right outside.
Lion then activated the rover's communications package, boosting his own signal range.
He opened up the Archius comms. "I've located a small settlement to the south of our location. Relaying coordinates."
Having arrived at the hangar, Dwan noticed Yanim talking to Varn, as the two stood next to some hoverbikes. "Hey you two, what's going on?", Dwan asked the two.
"Ah, spaska, Dwan. These vehicles you s-see are called ATDs. I have built many of them f-for the crew during these last t-two days. One of them is yours, that one, second from right-" she said, pointing to the far side of the hangar. "Do you know how to ride? These are v-very fast."
"I've ridden something similar before.", Dwan answered Yanim.
Varn sat on the ATD and turned on the engine. "Oh, she's purring like a kitten!" He looked at Yanim and Dwan. "I'll be right back, just gonna take her for a spin." He blasted off right out of the hangar. A loud "YEAHHHH" could be heard in the distance.
Nycho squinted back. "Of course, Arthur. It's simply a little trick I play on people. If you wish for it to stop, then certainly." She stood up from her chair. "As for the correlation between the Kauzen and the oracle I have reason to believe that, them being an ancient race that controlled half the galaxy, they either had knowledge about the oracle or may even have been the creators of it." She then lowered her eyebrows a little. "Now what I am about to tell you is for yours and the captains ears only." Nycho opened the safe behind her desk. She produced a small piece of the oracle. "This is, of course, not a piece of the real orcle. This is merely a copy that Mr.Saw had made for me. It is useless and will not work with the other pieces. I simply need a kauzen artifact to find any similarities between these two".
Nycho locked the copy back in the safe, and then looked back at Arthur. "I would suggest you discuss with the captain. If you want him to be absolutely convinced, you can bring him here."
"Hmm... fascinating." Arthur said, as he examined the fake piece of oracle. He turned to Nycho.
"I suppose I can understand your theory, though I do believe that it would be better for the captain to hear if it came out of your mou- I mean, out of your brain. That, and given that I doubt he'd appreciate talking to me after current events... let me call him down right now." Arthur stated. He brought up his communicator, found the captain and sent a small message to him.
Captain Spacehawk. Our new resident scientist, Ms Nycho Shayus and I would like to discuss something with you, relating to our mission. If you would like to find your way down to her quarters, we'll be waiting for you.
Jeremy was about to get on his new ATV right one second until duty called him once again. He groaned and saw the message came from Arthur. The last time both made contact was two weeks ago. While Jeremy was a bit frustrated at his behavior lately but it was still considered unprofessional to hold personal grudges. He walked up to the lift and found himself around the quarters. He saw Nycho and Arthur huddled together.
Iska was very delighted to get to try out Isoro on the open dunes that lay open outside of the hangar door. She wore her ordinary gorka pants and combat boots, but had skipped her jacket in favor of her tanktop in this unbearable heat.
She fired up Isoro, which let out a majestic mechanical roar.
As she steered it towards the ramp he saw Yanim working on the ATD, she whistled to her. When Yanim turned her head around she replied with a big grin and pumped her fist in the air, signaling Yanim to get a move on. Cranking the handle, Iska flew out of the hangar with a celebratory scream.
She located Lions tracks in the sand and followed him up on the hill. She stopped next to the rover and shut Isoro off. She lifted up her goggles and wiped the sweat of her forehead, then proceeded to light a cigarette. She looked to Lion, trying to produce a smile. "This heat is... not good for Iska" she puffed, breathing through her mouth.
Lion chuckled. "At least you're not a robot." He gestured towards the grey cloak covering most of his body. "This piece of synthweave and a swarm of nanobots is the only things that are keeping me cooled down right now."
He continued to scout the surroundings when he suddenly stopped. He turned to Iska. "Feels good with some RnR though, right? Past months have been truly eventful."
Iska was confused by the term RnR, so Lion had to simplify it for her. "Humans use many complicated words" she sighed. Even so Iska did feel that it was good to get some rest after all that had happened. She leaned back in the seat and gaze across the dunes when she spotted the settlement in the distance. "Is that village you told about?" She asked. She squinted her eyes, wondering what kind of people would want to live in this scorching heat and have this dry particle ground that got everywhere around them. Must be a strange bunch, she reckoned.
[Meanwhile:]
Nycho noticed Jeremy enter the room. "Good day, captain" she shimmed happily, "I assume Arthur summoned you here to have me explain a few things?". Nycho looked back at Arthur and then Jeremy, Who were both giving eachother dirty looks. Perhaps Arthur had been right about her laying out the plan for the captain.
