Honestly this could be done entirely through the thread / PMs. If you take first, for example, you get a message asking for whatever you want. Those choices are reserved (moved around in the backpack to make it simpler?) and then second place gets to pick from what's left. Move on down the list.
The effort-part is getting people in-game, but at least with this, no one is at fault due to timezones.

Advantage of doing it in the thread makes things public, so the announcement is known to everyone and choices are shown to everyone.
I think we can safely assume the winner wants the buds and the unusual. So, I think if everyone compiled a list of their top five or six hats besides those two, we'd be in pretty decent shape.

I think if there is a posted time beforehand, that'd be best. It'll be hard regardless, some people (Such as myself) work, so they might not be available for a few hours. I think it's pretty safe to assume the winner will take the buds and the football helm, so if the winner is offline, just leave those two out for him/her to get when they get back(unless someone states that they don't want them if they win.).
Anywho. Buds and Football helm will be my first pick, and down from there.
