I was wondering why they didn't use Valve's servers so the traffic didn't impede the event, but I think it's because Valve didn't really have anything to do with this. The hat doesn't look good, the Saxton Hale quotes lack their usual humor and Kritzkast didn't even get mentioned in a blog post.

Valve had lots to do with this, they made their web API available for this and patched the game just for the hat. :v:
Managed to get on site, can't get it. Oh well, i wouldn't use it.
