I've downgraded a good amount of my hats to get the hat I like. I don't care about the rarity, I just choose the hat I love the best for that certain class and will trade whatever I have for it.
So true. I love the Batter's helm and it took me a time to get it and I have to tell. IT WAS FUCKING WORTH IT.
I recently spotted something rare ingame
A hatless heavy
See the problem I have is that it makes me feel less special when I see someone else with that hat. This is why I don't like the Sombero as much as I used to. When I first saw it, I was like "Wow, that's a really cool hat" but now that I see it everywhere and loads of Pyros are wearing it, it no longer looks cool to me anymore.
I hate the feeling I get when I see someone with the hat I want.
I do admit I submitted to the feeling of a hat being too common when I traded away my Chieftain...
I got it from a crate, and I soon realized it would lose worth quickly due to being dropped from crates.
A part of me regrets getting rid of it, as I did like the hat.
Like the Tyrants and Kabuto, it was just another war inspired item... however what made me feel this one fit him better, was that this time it was at least something that fit his patriotic American personality a lot better. Oh well, at least I can get it back later when it becomes as common as the Napper's.
Apart from the Hound Dog.
It's still impossible to get.
I got one for a Towering Pillar, and I got my Towering Pillar back by trading a Black Box.
Apart from the Hound Dog.

Is it?
Hell, I had it, got sick of it, traded for a Kabuto. Totally worth it.
"tl;dr: Hats shouldn't be based by their rarity but how much you like them or not."
Right about that. I really don't care what the "rare" value a hat has, it just a hat... This isn't a WOW game to be honest. Safe and sound hat was great imo. That what people would want to be doing, trade in a hat they want to be using and like the most, not over "rarity" it is or "new" hats = rare.
I hate how people are like that. This guy comes in and is all, "Trading Dr Dappers for good deal. Nappers and Old Guada is NOT a good deal."
Instant douche in my book.
I'm not alone in the world!
Seriously I hate how the people like the rarity
first week of polycount: I TRADED 4 HATS FOR THIS CHIEFTAN! IT's AWESOME
Second week (series 2 crates introduced): THE CHIEFTAN IT's FUCKING HORRIBLE AND COMMON HAT
Only hats I really care for are medic/heavy/pyro as those are the three classes I play the most.
I swear one day I'll get ze goggles and finish my medic collection, fuck
I agree with this wholeheartedly. I have a hat or two that I CANNOT get rid of because everyone says they're too common.

Who cares at all?
iRunner wanted to trade his Nappers or his Sombrero for my only Vintage Brain Slug, my favorite Pyro hat.
I said no, because those hats are too common.
Then he made this thread.
Look, I have my favorite hat for every class. Now I'm only trading for value, nothing more. Why would I trade my only Brain Slug for a Nappers?
Hat rarity / trading value comes into play when you have 40+ vintage hats. How the hat looks doesn't matter anymore. I'm sorry if this offends you. Its a different trading mindset. I could trade any hat in my entire backpack for a Nappers, I'm not giving away my favorite vintage pyro hat for it.
what? they're all around!
then you give me one. :colbert:

Irunner raged and made a thread ranting about it.
/thread
It's unusual to see someone without a hat.
Shit, I remember back in the very first few days of hats, anyone with one was an instant server celeb.

Haha, this thread is completely different now that it was just a thread made against you.
It's not so much a problem of hats being common imo, it's this fucking vintage shit. Faggots won't trade unless it's vintage.

If you look in the equip station, vintage is listed as a whole other item, I had 2 pain trains, one vintage one not.
Both showed up in the equip station.
Vintages don't do anything fuck so many trade ruined because of people saying "Is it vintage?"

I like normal better when I'm planning to name them.
Yellow is a lot more noticeable and easier to read against the black inspect background than blue :3:

This is why I traded my braingslug for a trophy belt.
I have wanted the sniper hat ever since it was released, because it actually looks good on him.
Medic Mask is still pretty 'rare' because alot of people actually HAVE it but are unwilling to trade them. I hate it I can't get a med mask whatsoever because dicks don't want to trade or it's impossible to find somebody who wants to trade, and when you find somebody it's already gone. :v:
I agree with this to an extent. I think that one must trade for rarity at first. My way of going about it is to pick a favorite hat for each class, then strive to get all of those hats. The only problem is that when you start out with 1 hat, you are going to need to work at it to get 9. At this point, I decided to just get the Max hat and earbuds, because those are my favorite, and work for every class.
They should take out the hat store. It kills the purpose and feeling of finaly getting the hat you wanted.

they should take out hats in general
they should take out hats in general
Honestly, I don't see the problem. They don't take anything out of the game. Plus, for the people who like to trade for hats, it gives them more to do in the game. It's not like the hats give you 2x damage.
I'm still poor and Irish.
Add me on steam you can have my Hallmark.
Also, you people getting all pissed about people only wanting vintage, or only trading for value, really annoys me.
The reason I have all of my favorite hats now is only because I traded for value, rather than for the look of hats themselves. I sold the valuable ones for multiple hats. I had fun doing it... it was like its own little side-game, like Recettear or something. I started with 7 crappy hats, and ended up with 40 cool hats.
But you get pissed at me for not wanting to trade for non-vintage. If I ONLY care about future trading value, now that I have all of my favorites, WHY would I trade for non-vintage?
You guys have to accept that people are trading for different reasons. Vintage matters to me, because I can trade it for something better in a future update, while non-vintage will only become more and more common.
This shouldn't offend you. I'm kind to every person I trade with, always explaining why I wouldn't accept their offer, and apologizing if I don't want to trade for it. Meanwhile, I'll be wearing my Medic Mask in-game, someone will open a trade and throw a Sombrero into the window and say "That", I'll say "I'm sorry, but I'd rather hold onto my mask because the Sombrero is a bit too common at the moment", and they'll reply "Well fuck you then".
That is much worse than me caring about hats being vintage. Everyone has their personal reasons for trading for certain things - some want a cool hat (normal people), some want increased future trading value (super-nerds like me). Please, just respect each others' reasoning, and accept that not EVERYONE wants another Sombrero.
I like my Tyrant's helm. No matter if everyone got it.
