Cool. Perhaps it is to imply that it's taking place in a time period before the official game takes place (Like when Meet the Heavy was made).

Well, that looks a bit more like the Beta Soldier outfit, but I don't get why it only appears in that panel. Did he magically changed clothes between panels or something?

Is just a little error, nothing too depth.
new styles for classes?
No, not really.
All the hats make sense for the characters or fit in with TF2's over-the-top/cartoony style except for the promo stuff.
Although Valve (or Robin) have said that they decided to change the art direction a little to add customization, but everything is still over-the-top/cartoony with a 60's spy theme so it hasn't really been changed. It is not a serious game, hats make it even less serious. It's not like they have added super realistic looking modern day hats or anything.
It is still TF2.
Valve should just allow hat to be disabled or make a vanilla mode.

Yeah, at first I didn't quite understand why the Heavy was going through his "Meet the" speech again. Turns out that was the actual Meet the Heavy recording.
Anyway, sick update. Hope they keep this artist on

I partially agree with you, but I think Simski has a point: there's some items that cross the line. Some of them cross it as if there wasn't line at all.
But that's kind of subjective, person tastes and point of views are as varied as colours.

Well it's certainly not the Medigun from the new Medic pack.
[img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2126504/medic/All-items-promo.png[/img_thumb]
It probably is the Quick-Fix, which makes me wonder two things. A)What will the set Medigun do? B) Releasing two Mediguns in one update? Seems like a lot of attention for him. Maybe it means Meet the Medic is coming too. This is supported by the fact that the Medigun is shown in pictures of the Medic, that could possibly be paused videos, in a comic about the backstory of the Meet the Team series. I guess Valve is finally showing some attention to our favourtie German psychopath-with-a-PhD.
-snip-
EDIT2: Snipped out the bit about the Quick-Fix possibly not being in thi supdate, because if it wasn't, that'd mean the new Medigun in the comic WAS part of the Medic set, which would be a huge middle finger to YM for not using his Medigun from the set.

It's not that weird, it sorta happened before (The Sniper had 2 different secondary weapon replacements on the Sniper VS Spy update)

You can call it whatever you like, it won't change the fact that in sense of artstyle it has nowhere close to the same consistency with time period, the personalities, the colorstyle, and the subtle humor of the original TF2 artstyle. TF2 didn't use to be this wacky kids game you love today, it was a mature game with comical elements.
Just because TF2 has wacky elements it doesn't make it a kids game.

Looking over your posts, a good third of your recent posts have been in the TF2 section saying the exact same thing over and over again.
Are you farming agrees or do you have short term memory loss?

Yeah, but the Medigun is more like a Primary than a Secondary for Medic. It'd be like if the Heavy got two minguns or the Soldier got two Rocket Launchers in the same update. And don't say MannConomy, Jumper doesn't count. It's not really a weapon you'd use in serious play. Unless you're insane.

He's slowly turning into a brainslug, his hatred for it is becoming so strong he's starting to behave like one, trying to brainwash us so we start thinking like him. In a few months the transformation will be complete, and we will all transform into brainslugs like him :ohdear:

None of that has changed. All the hats fit in with the time period with the characters and are not out of place - Other then promo stuff and a few of the paints.
I see nothing which makes it a kids game, customization doesn't make it a kids game. I'd hate for it to be a kids game. I started playing before they added the hats, and i don't have loads of hats - i still play the game and like it.
What do you mean by subtle humour with the original artstyle? Can you give me an example?

Hahahahaha... I would continue this argument, but since I've began this evening by drowning my sorrows with booze I don't want to wake up this morning to find myself permanently banned for creating a 10 page shitstorm.

They do fit in though if you consider the characters personalties.

They fit especially terrible if you consider the characters personalities.

Sniper's hats fit with his personality just fine
Do you guys think the rest of this content will get released after the Saxxy awards? Some people think there's going to be some other update after this due to the meet the medic screens.

There are quite some things that point at the release of another update soon:
- replay update isn't mentioned as a major update
- much more content was leaked to be ready
- meet the medic hints in the comic
- a contest that ends in 2 weeks
I could see a few outcomes at the end of the 2 weeks regarding Meet The Medic
1. Meet The Medic is released in full when all the submissions are in
2. Meet The Medic is released on the day the awards are handed out
3. Meet The Medic is released in a later update along with the new medic gun
4. Meet The Medic is released when Robin hits the "release video" button instead of the "Fire Cory Peters" button. (Or the "release more hats" button if your into that kinda thing)
Really what simski is getting at is this, nightlord. Take this piece of character art from before release:

Yes there are a few details from the beta that are no longer there, but for the most part it is what tf2 looked like on release. Imagine, instead, the image was released as:

Naturally I chose an extreme example as the first for sake of clarity, but it's obvious that the soldier's hat sticks out like a sore thumb. It is not fitting with the current art direction of the class's in anyway.
Now before I go further, I must clarify I don't feel you view is necessarily wrong. TF2's art style has shifted. Adding a hat in isolation is like proving The Beatles were a bad band by only looking at "Dig It". If the sniper vs. spy updated had added only a single hat, say demo's afro, the community's response would've likely been more negative, but by adding the system all in one go, the style was drastically shifted to allow proper accommodation for player customization and has only expanded since then. Whether this is a good or bad thing is up for debate.

Another rather garish example. People looking forward to the game, if they were to see this piece of art, before orange box was released would've asked the question "wtf is the heavy doing with an umbrella hat?" They wouldn't have necessarily cried foul, canceled their preorders, and left the game to rot. They would've likely gotten used to it and begrudgingly accept that valve does whatever valve wants to do, but it still looks out of place.

What I'm trying to do here is get you to empathize with Simski's position. I'm of the opinion that you're right. That many of the hats do fit the characters (I wouldn't say all) in the current game's context. But recognize that the context has changed over time. Simski bought the game partly because the game's original context appealed to him and he is very disappointed at how it has changed. Not necessarily that it is entirely gone, but the parts that have disappeared or that have been drastically altered now affect him very negatively and so the overall appeal is lost to him.

Obviously the last two are much less garish than the first two, but they are still off. Why is it the pyro has a parasitic slug and references a popular 90's comedic cartoon, when the other classes are played straight and serious? Why is this frenchman sporting a dramatic, japanese mask? While they don't fit with the original character design, they do fit in now, in the context of the rest of the shogun update, or in the context of the pyro's new, altered persona as developed by the fanbase, rather than the original team (keeping in mind the fans just percieved him as cute, quirky, and female, with the only supporting evidence being his taunts which, in my opinion, are far outweighed by the fact he acts that way after psychotically burning people to death).
TF2 has changed. Simski does not like these changes. You do. But recognize that both of you are simply reacting differently to a single occurance. You're both right in your own ways, and the only difference between you two are your opinions regarding it.
If you truly want my opinion in the matter, I liked the original tf2's artstyle. I feel it had much more artistic merit, had more to say than the current tf2. But I do like the current tf2's gameplay, messy as it is, because of the freedom it offers me. The different play styles and I can experiment with and play around with. So there.
