I can only say one thing - when the weapons first come out, they'll each be worth several reclaimed. I can recommend not trading for them for at least a month, regardless of how much you like them.
The same thing happens every major weapon-adding update; the new weapons come out, everyone is ecstatic about them, people pay several reclaimed, then the prices go down and they're worth a scrap each.
The Brass Beast and the Mad Milk are prime examples of this; they both went for 1-2 reclaimed because of the rarity and novelty, but in the end they're worth as much as any other weapon. I really suggest you folks hold back with your trades for a while until this blows over slightly, you'll save a lot of metal.

As the bones of the target are primarily going to compress, if your fingers are being bent it is more likely for your fingers to sustain tension injuries or actually break than if brass knuckles are worn.
Wearing brass knuckles could thus allow you to swing faster and with less care paid to placement and technique without injuring your hand.
I've got nothing on why it does less damage though. Maybe the heavy just throws a much better punch bare-handed?
It honestly scared me when I realised how many fucking roles the Medic voice actor has done.
