Other than the team colors thing I haven't seen anyone trying to give criticism.
Look at half the fucking hats in this thread and tell me if they make sense.
I just think it would look better on the soldier.
Maybe that's why Daimao made it last year.

- Team colours are too dark, I think you should make them more like the rest of the pyro's suit.
- The strap looks rounded, it should look flat imho.
- Why are his aviator goggles smaller than his gas mask goggles?
- The brown of the helm itself is fine, the brown on the goggles looks too saturated to me.
just work on it, rome wasn't built in a day

or, you know, he can just ignore you
I came into this page expecting people's models.
I left disappointed.
we have 7 mods and 9 pages left.
and 2 of them have been made or posted before.

you guys sure are a disagreeable lot today
I think it looks odd. He has goggles on his head, and on his face.
Maybe if the goggles weren't perfectly round or in a different shape from the mask's goggles it wouldn't look so weird.
I think if you resized the second pair of goggles to match the gasmask, it would look a little better.
But that's just my opinion, otherwise, it's pretty good.
if neodement finishes his stack of hats mod before the end of this emporium, it'll be worth it
Demo sure looks happy. Like the ones who requested this a couple of times in the last emporium, I hope.

That looks fantastic.

At least have the decency to quote me :P
And yeah, I try to make constructive criticism, but if others bring it in a not-so-positive way you can either
a) "explain your reasoning why you did it the way you did"
b) "ignore the not-so-positive part and make changes if you agree with the criticism"
c) "tell them you don't like the way they put it (but be sure to do this in a nice way otherwise you are a hypocrite)" or
d)" ignore them and do whatever you want."
Option e) "start whining about how everyone is a big meanie" isn't really a good one if you want to be taken seriously, hope to get future "proper" criticism and/or don't want the thread to deteriorate further.
And just a little update:
Changed the noise to look more like... well, noise. In the screenshot it doesn't look nearly half as good as in game, with both material layers scrolling.

Unfortunately, althought it can be a mistake on my part, I couldn't manage to get the bottom texture to animate (showing a pyro face flickering) and scroll at the same time, so I might leave it at that after all.
So... Any help with animated textures?
How can people argue about a hat making sense or not for so long without The Necromobile making a guest appearance.
Well here you go chuckleheads!

Nice static :3
I don't think it's right for the pyro, he doesn't have much airtime, so why would he need those goggles?
The joke is that he's wearing goggles over a mask.

Try them all, I tried various and found 3DS Max if the only one I like, but you may find another to suit your preferences better.
WIP new heavy hat

I want it to look like a cross between these when it's done:

(yeah I know it's not a hat but that design is pretty cool, if a little complex for TF2)

Good idea, bad idea? Let me know what you think, I just totally want to make a heavy hat.
Good idea.

I mean, is it hard when you're a newbie at 3D art D:? like, daimo did things really fast. D:
Well since I don't know how to properly UVW Map I don't think I'm going to continue with the Garrison Cap until I learn how to and I have watched and read plenty tutorials and none have helped me.
O and I can't texture.
I'm Thinking for starters, trying to make this:

glued on pyro's head, for his mental sickness.

Try 3DS max 2010, it's the only 3D program I tried so far. Followed the built-in viking hat tut and I was ready to go. My first 3D model ever got a 9.89/10 (bScore) on FPSB. It all depends on if you have a good idea, a slight sense for style (I prefer hats that look like they could be made by valve, so if you're not very good at modelling or texturing, don't overdo it, it's better to keep it simple than to overdo yourself and fail, for a great example of keeping it simple look at noodleboy's ox ring for the heavy), and are willing to teach yourself a few things.
Be on the lookout for great tutorials; look in the tutorial section of FPSB, look at the "Beginner's Guide to Custom Hat Models" on the TF2 section in the Steam forums, and just try to apply the skills you learned appropriately. Some hats can do with jigglebones, some can't. If you're inexperienced with making .qc and .vmt files just rip them from another hat that has approximately the effect you want, as you start playing around with them you'll learn how to create exactly the perfect effects for the perfect hat.
Don't get discouraged if your first model isn't a gigantic success, I guess I was very lucky with that, and it helps that I've been playing around with Photoshop and generally designing/drawing things for quite a few years.

For UVW unwrapping in 3DS max, I really love the pelt option. Especially if you unwrap it per coloured area and use the AO baking tut (you can find a link in the steam forum thread I mentioned earlier), you can quickly make a goodlooking texture. Hell, my pirate hat texture was just that; I unwrapped most elements using pelt, baked the AO texture, opened the generated texture in PS, set that layer to multiply, and added a colour or gradient overlay per element in layers under that first layer. A greyish, darker team colour as a base, a orange-to-yellow gradient for the rim, and a basecolour-to-brightteamcolour gradient on the sides.
I'm Going to try 3DSMax9.
i'll keep trying, maybe one day i'll submit my hats here.
Rated useful.

If you just make it stuck it'll look like he licked it and stashed it there.
