One person designing the general structure of the map, the other working on the aesthetics.
If you're going to do that, I'd recommend that both of you work on them both. Even in uneven shares, it keeps both of you on the same pages for both of those aspects.

also In my opinion I think the standard Control points would be more realistic in terms to how World War I worked.
It was both sides fighting over a small bit of land. Both Sides trying to push the other out.
But that's just my opinion.

I don't know how it works in Blender (that is Blender, right?) but it would appear to be your smoothing groups, or normals. Whichever Blender uses. Try searching around for how to set smoothing groups in Blender on the Googler.
