Windows Snipping Tool lets you select a specific area of your screen and it saves it as a screenshot. Your computer might already have it on there too, but probably just called "Snipping Tool"

I'm not seeing any compression artifacts on his images, so it's either decent quality JPG's or it saves them in a lossless format. His issue does stem from having anti-aliased photos and an aliased selection.
If I knew how to do it in GIMP, I'd suggest creating an alpha mask out of two screen captures - one on a white background, one on a black background.

The photos are in JPG format, but I'll try doing what you've suggested.
I was looking through the thread. For No Manns Land, I think that the best way to represent the meet the medic battlefield in a map would be to make attack/defend style map rather than a 5cp. And you could throw in the trenches and city environment for the earlier parts of it since most attack defend maps come in 3's.
Also, for the battery shotty, how about the battery is plugged into the shotgun rather than being wired into it?

Well, I tried this. Due to my total lack of texturing skills, I managed to make the frames white even though I made them all black in the texture.

You can't do that as a variable, you'll have to either make a permanent Firstperson Model, or use a script that removes First person view and uses the world model of the scout. Either that or VALVe makes it possible themselves.
