I'm out of ideas.
From emporium 35 (shown in model viewer without the base color on it):
Mine is based on the shako worn by Landwehr units in the 1860s-1880s, but it's pretty much the same thing.
I haven't made any recent posts about this hat, because I've been working on other stuff, but I have made some more progress on this one, but it's still not done.
There have been changes mainly to the model, but the only thing that needs to be done now is that I need to make some changes to make the uv better, then retexture it some, and it'll be done.
EDIT: Maybe I'll work on finishing it now, before I forget about it again.
I'm also going to make the paintable part be just the strap, rather than how I had it.
Ohshit i had a feeling someone were gonna do it but i didnt seen it

It's okay. I just wanted to make sure you knew I had already been working on one. I'm not stopping you from continuing to work on yours.
Anyways, since I haven't felt like doing the texture work on my shako, I've started working on this instead:

I still need to model the handles and add some other stuff, then fix some small stuff, optimize it and do the uv (which will be a major pain in the ass with this thing).
I may also need to mess with the proportions a little, but it's currently pretty close to the same size as the default minigun.

A rule of thumb is to always add some kind of paint brush look to everything to help it fit into TF2's visual style. But be sure you don't end up making it TOO messy or cluttered. When adding rust, scratches, paint strokes, etc., be sure you don't slap it all together randomly or make it so bold and obvious.
Another rule of thumb is to always outline metal with a thin line, even a few tiny scratch marks are good as well. You just always have to make sure you don't make it look messy and cluttered.

btw, I don't really like how the chainmail clips into the Demo's collar, that's also something you should look into.

In addition to what Nidhogg said, also mess with the UV to make sure that the chain mail doesn't change size. It currently looks bigger around his head than it does at the bottom.

(dumbs incoming)
I finished it because i am bad at blender
The day i'm gonna make a good TF2-content like hat.....well......
Anyways i hope to see more about that Robot Engie pack and the N. Tropy hat
though everything isn't supposed to be paintbrushed in tf2, that's a new thing that has appeared more and more, originally pretty much only world textures had brushstrokes
times have changed however, that's why i'm adding brushstrokes on the player characters for the improvement pack, to match the detail of hats, misc, weapons etc
speaking of which, could anyone fix up a texport or AO or something of medic so i can see the pouches clearly?

The question mark was about the spikes, because I was unsure about that addition. The colors you currently see are base colors.
About the chainmail, I can't really do anything because anything I do makes it clip more.
But thanks, noted!

Ironically the spikes seem fine to me (I never really thought about it, I was more drawn to the metal plating). If you want to add something to those spikes, then fuck it, PAINT BRUSH STROKES AHOY. That never seems to fail. :V

Paintable showercap.
slowly losing faith on this ammo belt.
I don't like the random red splashes in the paint texture for the showercap. It looks like you couldn't be bothered tracing all around the flowers, so you just drew a crude circle around each one.
I'm only saying that's what it looks like, not that you actually did that.

I think it adds a nice bit of red to the hat when its been painted
Did anyone manage to grab the URL in the error from the items_game.txt 404 error from the last few days?

Actually pie tony yelled at me for it not having rough brushstrokes. So I drew rough brushstrokes around the flowers(they're not circles) and that's how it turned out.
I don't have to trace around the flowers, they are a backgroundless shape so I can simply add a large stroke or select a large area around them :P
