Attaching a speedometer to Gordon in the SDK, I found that he runs at about 30 MPH when wearing the HEV suit. If you can do that, you can go bananas with a crowbar.
EDIT: Also, yeah. TF2 is not about realism, at all. There are TELEPORTERS and you're complaining about the fact that he swings an entrenching shovel too slowly?

Black mesa had rocket propelled crowbars as standard issue. They are rated for everything from opening your daily cereal boxes to saving (dooming?) the human race.
I just tried swinging it again, and it turns out, it all matters how you hold it, before I was holding it in the middle unlike what the Soldier does, now I held it at the bottom and it was noticeably slower.
I could still swing it faster but you get the idea.
