it seems like i've paid what, 15 bucks and all i got was this stupid hat
but on the other hand, it was worth it to play for the past....year or so.

I thought they will give that sexy soldier helmet with stars for players who bought the game before this f2p crap. I dissapoint.
So far, the biggest upside will be that I can introduce my friends to TF2 without them having to buy it. I bought TF2 for a friend once but it's not like I can run around and hand out copies. Oh wait, now I can!
And regarding the noobs, I think most will go back to Battlefield Heroes and stuff within a month or so. TF2 is a game with a pretty steep learning curve and people who need quick, free bursts of fun will probably move on soon.
