motherfuckers better buy stamps they'll be playin' for the free, the least they can do is toss a few dollars our way
Okay go find an F2P FPS that isn't plagued with hackers.
I don't need to because as I said, TF2 already has hackers and I have nothing to prove.
While it's really the only complaint I have, it's probably the worst thing that can come out of this: This would most likely attract a lot more incredibly dense children who found the game through just a Google search of "free game online" to the game. Some of the current community is already bad enough, what with bizarre obsessions with hats and obnoxious elitism, but this would just sink the community to a new low. That is, if TF2 actually went free-to-play. As it stands, it's more or less just the Free Week being blown way out of proportion.
Atm I'm just worried about the possibility of hackers. Valve did say in the past that the only thing that kept people from hacking in TF2 was the price tag.
For example, in-game voice chat can be a tool for evil, but it can also be an awesome tool for making new friends. We're never sure that a decision we make without data will be a good one, so what we've chosen to do is ship with these kinds of features initially available to free customers, but with a system where we can them off from the backend. So if we see that one of these features is turning out to be a net negative, we'll be able to easily remove it from free customers.
So if we see that one of these features is turning out to be a net negative, we'll be able to easily remove it from free customers.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/06/24/breaking-team-fortress-2-is-now-free-to-play-forever/ http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/23/valve-relaunching-team-fortress-2-as-free-to-play-title/
If I took a shot of watered down shandy for every false rumor reported by joystiq, PCgamer, Kotaku and their ilk, I'd suffer a fatal case of either liver or water poisoning.
Guy's made some serious progress. I mean, 'ave you seen 'im now?
This was in 2007.
I don't need to because as I said, TF2 already has hackers and I have nothing to prove.
We are talking about the aimbotting, speedhacking fuckers not the "lol i chang material" hackers. The injected hacks do get caught eventually, but now we'll have people getting banned, starting a new account and off they go again, they won't even have to spend money on hacks anymore, just download any free detected one, play until banned, repeat. Oh and you don't need too because there aren't any.
I'm okay with this, granted we get a store credit and not some bullshit hat.

what if VAC on free accounts kicks in immediately instead of after 3 weeks ;)
also you guys are complete idiots if you think they won't have a measure to prevent thousands of hacker accounts. remember, that was the one reason they gave for not going f2p years ago, so obviously they've found a solution that fits. i reckon free players will be restricted to official valve servers or not allowed to trade. or perhaps you can't play tf2 until you have another source game, like mods and the SDK.
Find me 1 free to play game that isn't full of hackers.
Okay Holy shit, lots of ninjas. I should have refreshed before replying :v:

i love h2

oh my god we have so much in common would you like to have my babies
but seriously guys TF2 has had 217 updates since 2007 for absolutely zero cents and now you're whining because it becomes FREE whereas half the other publishers have paid DLC so what do you want?
Sure is butthurt in here. Seriously, what is wrong with this. You all paid for the game 3 years ago. 3 fucking years you have been playing this freely updated game, you think that isn't worth the money?
Seriously, this is absolutely pathetic. First and foremost, you're acting as if the community hasn't already gone to hell - something that you yourselves often cite in reference to the game's decline in quality. Secondly, who cares?! You've had this game for three, four years... and with free content on a regular basis! You don't complain when Valve capitalizes on the failings of the random drop system, yet you throw a tantrum when they make the game available to more people? I "lost" Team Fortress 2 when it turned into an unbalanced hat-simulator. I complained, but never like this. Frankly, you're acting like pedantic, entitled children - I've long had distaste for the TF2 community, but this is a whole new level of whining. Regardless of whether the article is valid or not, your reactions are.
You guys know that in order for the F2P model to work, the community has to be satisfied with the game and find a value in it. This means if Valve starts pulling "Pay to Win" type things, the community won't be happy, and won't make fantastic new items quite as often. And then Valve won't have a way to draw people in. It's in Valve's best interest to keep things moving exactly the same as they are now, with only the barrier of entry removed.

Just saying, think about those people.
Fucking stupid idea. God damn this is going to make the community worse.
Incoming griefers ahoy
yeah it's kind of ironic that people are complaining that "the community will turn into shit" when facepunch has probably the whiniest, most self-entitled tf2 forum i've ever read
Okay
Beaten to the punch buddy. I said F2P FPS in a later post.
Beaten to the punch buddy. I said F2P FPS in a later post.
So you moved the goalposts?
I'm sorry max, but I can't believe you fell for the bullshit in that article.
yeah it's kind of ironic that people are complaining that "the community will turn into shit" when facepunch has probably the whiniest, most self-entitled tf2 forum i've ever read
Fortunately for facepunch it doesn't have voice communication.
Also a friend of mine just bought this 4 days ago. Hes gonna feel like a fool now.
if the original develop article is fake, valve can legally sue them out the wazoo for libel
Pro's: more players Cons: shitface hackers
Also a friend of mine just bought this 4 days ago. Hes gonna feel like a fool now.
Maybe he should have bought it 3 years ago.
Beaten to the punch buddy. I said F2P FPS in a later post.
Even though it's not an FPS, it's still impressive that an open-source game has hardly any players who cheat. Seriously, you'd expect that it'd be laden with cheaters since the source is available to everyone :v:
