TF2 is now free-to-play

I'm perfectly okay with F2P. Those occasional hackers might be annoying, oh well.

also some people bought the game for £2.50 anyway. That was basically f2p and no-one complained.

I'm not sure if you notice, but the difference between one cent and free is quite a margin when it comes to players and retention

I once complained about tf2 being F2P, just because I thought they did not limit trading\drop system. Now that I know it, i'm perfectly fine with it and maybe I'll try being coach when I get home. Also, does the coach system needs voice? Or text\portal 2 like hints is fine?

My guess is that they play on the valve servers - through matchmaking.

Also it seems that most hackers usually come from Russia or Poland - any eastern europe country.
That's what i noticed anyway.

I actually enjoy matchmaking though - this way i don't have to wade through tons of nightteam saigns etc. just to find a quick game if FPUK is down. The only thing i don't like about it is that people on valve servers are usually never talking to each other. I mean never - chat is always clear, it's scary.

All it is, is you spectating someone, tethered to them by 30m, and you press buttons to tell them what to do. And it's all while they're in a real server, so almost nobody listens. I always thought it would be something like the tutorial, but nope.

I mean, I was very upset about F2P too, and the fact that "free accounts can't get rare items" and then seeing a Free account with earbuds made me wanna punch somebody, but still, I got over it. Just stick to your favourites server list and it'll be fine.

My best counter to these "lol, this guy got it for free, lemme ban him" and "WAHHH I WANT MY MONEY BACK" type people is rather simple. Instead of complaining on a forum, I'm going to Coach the new players and create an army of them.

Prepare, SPUF, prepare.

In all seriousness, I think this was a clever and generous move by Valve. They've done so much for a small group of people, now they're doing even more for an even LARGER group of people. If I had the money, I'd buy the Uber Update set just for the sole fact that $100 is worth all the time I've spent playing TF2.

In other news since free to play came out, Ive gotten a Drill hat for a reclaimed, been top of the scoreboard more times in one night than I used to average in a week. Killed Dozens of spies as they bumped right into me head on. And averaged 4 dominations a game. So yeah this is a good thing.

I agree... The F2P was a shock and not a good one at first... and yes the servers are full of people asking me "is premium worth it" and "how do I build a sentry" but the longer you wait, the more this will calm down. The mass of newbys will soon die out, some people will give up and go back to whatever they were playing before, the others will actually want to play and will soon be part of the valued community.

I wasn't so much annoyed about that its free now, more the fact that SO many people are now filling the servers... but as I said, wihtin a few weeks they would either have given up or become a genuine player, so I guess we should all just face the fact that valve can't change their mind now, so you might as well see the good sides to it.

It makes more sense now as a free to play game, considering the extreme amount of weapons, the cosmetics, and the cash shop. I only wish I hadn't payed money for it in the first place.
So that this whole transition from a well balanced and creative teambased shooter with 9 unique classes turned into a free to play deathmatch with cosmetics and a cash shop, wouldn't have been such a painful ride of disappointments and broken promises.
