Heavys role as a damage sponge kinda doesn't exist until he has a medic on him. Having to run back for health every 5 seconds, at his speed, just isn't much fun anyway. Once you get a medic though, you can just sit there with your chaingun mowing down everything and almost never dying.
It just sucks that he's still so dependant on medics. I mean once he gets a medic he's great, but until then, ehh. Just not much fun and not nearly as capable as other classes are. Sandvich only replaces medkits, and it's pretty slow at it too. Heavy still needs a medic in order to do much more than camp.

"Camping" is pretty much what defense classes do
The whole point of the heavy is to stick with a group of teamates and support them. The heavy dosn't do very well going solo... Especially without a medic or a payload cart. Unless your going against W+M1 pyros then the heavy is a good counter for those. Though if your in a really closed in room then the heavy works pretty well inside there also since a minigun up your face only takes about 2 seconds to kill.
Not really underpowered. Against certain classes like Sniper maybe, but I'm doing just fine.
Shoot bullets, eat sandwiches, sometimes use your fists.
Oh and, heavy is a defense class btw.
Imagine throwing the Sandvich as a physics object; if it hits an enemy it causes a very minimal amount of damage.

Heavy vs Sentry
The point that video at the very start was complete shit and whoever did that was an idiot. The heavy would have won that if he has already been spun up and then strafed out from the door.
All the sentry kills where the sentry was close to the corner the heavy could destroy them with little to no health loss by just shooting the parts of the sentry sticking out from behind the wall. He could also have won all the fights in the same situation with the engie tanking the sentry using the same tactics with little or no health loss again.

Different note,
The problem with the heavy is that he isn't effective enough at long med and med when he has no medic support. His primary should have been something that improved that weakness slightly and then do the usual drawbacks like no pre spinning or something.

Also, HWG represents the ONLY mid-range class. Everything else is long range, mid to long range, or short range.
As far as I'm concerned, Heavy is still a close-range class. Close-to-mid range would be more accurate.
Because he is
heavy is pretty balanced actually
In the hands of someone half decent he can slaughter pubs but in comp play he is outclassed in everyway except on Turbine and a couple of other select maps.
HWG is my favourite class and has been since TFC, but in TF2 I generally use him for certain roles other than "assault". My favourite way to use him is to follow friendly engineers and defend them while they set up. The amount of spy kills I've gotten without dying just from defending engineers is brutal.
Luckily I have a friend who is quite willing to play Medic and almost exclusively heal me. Sometimes we mix it up and use Kritzkrieg, but an invulnerable Heavy working his way through enemy territory is a force to be reckoned with. Especially if the spies suck.
I think the problem is that the Heavy isn't underpowered, it's that everyone else is overpowered.
Heavy is a defense glass, I sit at the intel and spin my gun until someone walks in and destroy there ass's. I also use Natasha as it slow them down but STILL dominates.
The scout is meant to be able to kill heavy because the scout is meant to run into a base, and if needed, even if it wont be easy kill someone. But the scouts fucked if someone else is with the heavy.
Also it takes skill to get the HWG right, know the classes advantages and all. He just isn't you're style, I use the pyro mostly.

Pyro + Intel room + Engy = 80% flawless defense.
Fat man is credit to team because he's great at fighting, but has balanced weaknesses.
Biggest gun, Slowest pace.
Two simple buffs for the heavy:
1) Slower Rev-Down time
2) Walk at Soldier speed when not holding a Minigun
That fucking rev-down pisses me off so fucking much it's not even funny and the Soldier speed one just makes logical sense (then again TF2 wasn't really the one for realism was it?)

Goldrush stage 3 is quite good for heavies. loads of corners to come around with gun spinning
I find Heavy better suited spraying into crowds rather than being in the front. A big guy in the back is pelting the other team with bullets. Now, you may think "5 damage isn't much." You're right, it isn't, but when he is at a distance, with his team in front, it becomes a bit of a disaster zone, because as long as he is pelting you and the enemy team is in front of you, you're in for a world of hurt. Double this if the Heavy is using Natascha. Of course, Spies, Snipers, and being caught off guard will generally take care of the big guy, he's still a nasty force when used correctly.
Is he UP then? Perhaps. Doing less than a pistol at long range makes me sadface, as 9mm bullets vs his large caliber, undefined sized bullets (I would assume the chain around his body is the caliber) doesn't seem right. Being countered by just about every class? Not sure if every class can counter, but they definitely will leave a hole in him.
Sniper: Natural counter
Spy: Natural counter
Pyro: Backburner or Axestinguishers make short work of the heavy if he is unaware or cannot aim
Soldier: DH soldiers, who can aim semi-decently, will destroy a heavy
Scout: At a distance, they're annoying, but upclose, your cone of fire is hardly useful, and if they jump all over you, taking shots at you, you can only hope hit-detection will look on your side, or hope your aim improves in the future. So really, it comes down to aim and awareness.
Medic: An underdog, if equipped with Blut and can land his needles, he will certainly win. Not upclose, mind you, but still. Again, awareness and aim.
Engineer: Sentries and shotguns. If he's tanking his sentry, you'll be cut to ribbons if you try to take it, but otherwise, you just have to be aware when the hardhat is around. And be careful for battle sentries.
Demoman: Self-explanatory. If they can aim their pills, you can kiss your gun goodbye.
The pattern? Aim and awareness. It used to be just spraying into a crowd, but ever since they tightened the cone (they being Valve), it boiled down to more aim. And since you're the biggest guy on the field, you draw more attention. You're also slow as molasses going uphill, so unless you have a death wish, stick behind your pals or stay with a medic. I can't tell you how many times I've seen Heavies fall apart on the battle field because they rushed up alone. You may be a big ol' ox, but even animal know not to stick their nose where it hurts.
Heavy is by no reason underpowered. In situations he can be like a mobile sentry of doom and destruction.
If the sandwich replaced melee, NOBODY would use the fists ever again.
I would. Taunt kills, dude. They're worth it. It's the same reason I only rarely use the KGB.

Therefore doesn't want a contender for the #1 Fat person of the year award.
