Why is it that when you shoot an ally your bullets stop harmlessly, yet your own explosives and sentry guns will kill you? Or does that fall under the category of philosophy?

Quite simply, a thock smog is emitted from the spies disguise kit, this fog shapes itself and appears as totally opaque to the opposite team, the spy also puts on a paper mask, to indicate to his teammates that he is disguised. (The smoke is invisible to the spies team, it exploits the visual augments that are provided to all the members of both teams and both team's sentries just see a large moving cloud (although, if the cloud is the colour of the opposite teams then they'll fire anyway.))
