I asked Brandon, he said that they're experimenting since they've not done a regularly-available item that is just a reskin essentially (except for the Fish, but it was part of a set and had the kill feed thing). If things don't work out well, he said that they'll likely change things up down the road.
Well I hope that they don't give the mailbox is own stats, or least not shity stats

I like the idea of reskins for existing weapons, as opposed to all new weapons. If there weren't any really inspiring ideas to make the new melee weapons unique, then they should stay functional as weapons that people already use, instead of becoming another Volcano Axe or Claidheamh Mor
if there is an Altair/Ezio knife blade reskin promo for the spy knife I may be forced to purchase assassin's creed 3

Was from a Blogpost. The artist who made the picture for the blogpost got fired for showing two misc items at once being equipped. They are now working on a fix for the artists mistake.

Yeah, everytime someone suggested a second misc slot I tought about the performance and clipping issues,

Assassin's Creed is a great game anyway. You shouldn't have to have a promo just to buy it.

For the contributors, they get a tad shafted because less people would want to shell out money for something that they already have that's also available through the drop system (ie non-promo). I expressed that concern in that email to Brandon, that it seems like it may be putting decent assets to waste since they're redundant, but he assured me that they're considering other attributes once their experiment is determined a success or failure.

I don't think that trying to be fair to the contributors should be a factor in deciding the utility of a weapon. If no one on the TF2 team was really compelled to give these weapons some cool new stats, then it's almost certainly a good thing that they were reskins.

If Valve isn't fair to contributors, then nobody will want to contribute.
If Valve isn't fair to contributors, then nobody will want to contribute.
Valve probably has enough worthwhile contributions to keep updating TF2 for another two or three years (except for Engineer of course). And besides, that point is irrelevant because it's simply not true. People contribute hats even though they don't do anything, and Valve has already played that "unfair" card by giving stats to certain hats anyway. Plus, don't you think Valve is being inherently unfair in this Summer Update anyway, by tying a bunch of new items ONLY to crates and not allowing them to be bought in the store right now? They even did the same thing over Christmas with the holiday crates. As far as I know, Valve doesn't wire any key profits to the contributors. Additionally, it seems like almost every update has a couple of hats or misc items that can't be crafted until a few days/a week after the update ships, which gives some items in the store more leverage over others because they're harder to get otherwise.
tl;dr Valve has already been plenty "unfair" with handling contributions, I seriously doubt making some of the weapons reskins (for the ultimate benefit of the game, mind you) will rain on too many people's motivation to submit stuff when there's already more severe things that people are willing to put up with.

Remember that this was right after the Uber Update, the team is a bit burned out. The presence of those two items gave them the opportunity to try this little experiment on a small scale (it's just 2 melee items, not a whole arsenal). They're taking advantage of the opportunity to test out this so they can see the community's response, weather they give them attributes or not later on is at their discretion once they observe the feedback they get on those.
I think feedback has generally been negative to the reskins.
Reskins just seem cheap, and almost "replace" the old weapon.

Eh, reskins seem way more tactful than garbage like "+25% damage, make Medic's job 75% more difficult" that we get with the rake.
Eh, reskins seem way more tactful than garbage like "+25% damage, make Medic's job 75% more difficult" that we get with the rake.
but the rake has its uses.
I look at random stats like that as completely and totally harmless. Yet reskins effect weapons already in the game, which causes more harm than random stats.

It was well-received in the Advanced Weaponiser and it's fairly useful if you're a loner or are separated from your team. It's situational, just like several other weapons that you don't feel like railing on.

Random stats like that make my Medic playing a headache. Also, random stats result in pants-on-head-stupid items like the Fists of Steel. I'll take my reskins, thanks. At least in this case, a contributor's weapon model can actually have a surefire productive function. The mailbox? I'd use that if I found it in a drop, but there's no other Pyro melee I'll touch aside from the Axetinguisher.
TF2 players clearly have an affinity for be attracted to stuff purely for how an item looks; TF2 wouldn't be called a hat simulator if this wasn't the case. I don't see the big deal in having weapons behave as cosmetics. At least here I'll actually use some of the community models for Pyro aside from the Degreaser.
Sad that the only place I'll willing use the rake is medieval.

but you'll use the mailbox, and not the axtinguisher.
That's my point. Reskins make old weapons absolutely obsolete because only dirty poors will equip the original.
New weapons with stats have a much lower chance of making old items obsolete. Reskins will always make the older, easier to obtain version obsolete

Maybe some don't like the newer reskins because they're just reskins andhave grown attached to the originals. Reskins won't make shit obsolete, just more aesthetic choice. Personally, I care little for reskins, but that's just my opinion.

That's a rather hyperbolic situation. Like I said, I'd only use the mailbox if I found it in a drop; I wouldn't bother crafting it (even if it had a specific recipe) because I essentially already have the weapon. There's plenty of players who wouldn't care to go out of their way to get the mailbox, or simply prefer the look of the Axetinguisher. Or maybe they'd swap between the two if they have both.

Ehh, I love the look of the Axtinguisher and I don't think I'd use the Mailbox over it, it's exactly the same thing except for the model and texture and frankly I think it looks worse than the Axtinguisher.
Maybe some don't like the newer reskins because they're just reskins andhave grown attached to the originals. Reskins won't make shit obsolete, just more aesthetic choice.
Unless someone really likes the appearance of the reskin, it won't be getting any love. Regular people have no incentive to pay for the new item when they can get it coincidentally through the drop system, until then, they'll just stay with the original.
Unless someone really likes the appearance of the reskin, it won't be getting any love. Regular people have no incentive to pay for the new item when they can get it coincidentally through the drop system, until then, they'll just stay with the original.
Again, just aesthetic choice. One person may discard it, the other will say 'Hey this is pretty funny/neat' and stick with that. I mean hell, Iron Kurtain. A minigun reskin and that was rather well received. It won;'t be long before we see more reskins of weapons that already exist, since Valve is in the process of doing such with promo's and updates.
I think I'd be sad if I got a weapon in game and it got given boring recycled stats.

Could always trade it to that one guy who is obsessed with collecting all of the TF2 gear, even if it is reskins. :v:
