Difference is that this is actual tf2 you're running instead of separate app

If I recall correctly, steamstats was run independently of the game, simply emulating a connection. This way, hl2.exe is actually running as it should normally be, just with the graphics module "disconnected". The net code isn't dependent on the renderer.
Still, I'm gonna wait and see what happens.

Running it now on my crappy laptop, it does affect its performance but not as much as it would do if TF2 was normally running. If we keep this quiet, maybe valve will forget about it...

How will Valve detect who used textmode?
They will probably just remove it in next update.
