• A New Way To Idle?
I still don't want to use this method because it's impossible to tell if the server you are on is connected to Steam servers. A lot of Idle servers have that problem: People idle for hours on it and then realize that it wasn't connected to Steam, so you just waste time. Also, how would you tell when the server disconnects?
I got about 7 items today using it. Servers don't really lose connection much anymore so it shouldn't matter.
I meanyou paranoids who don't get that even in a normal Idle server, you are supposed to run it while you are sleeping and not able to play Team Fortress. If it disconnects, you know about as much as if it disconnected while sleeping. Just connect to another idle server in the morning or what not if no one is dying. [editline]10:40PM[/editline] Fuck if it tells you what is going on in the console, then it should say that the server lost connection to steam or say DROPPED PLAYER FROM SERVER NO LOGON
You missed my point. If I join a server normally, and it does not have connection to Steam (Which is alarmingly too common), I go to my backpack and it says "SERVER HAS NO CONNECTION TO STEAM; LOADOUT UNAVAILABLE." Then I say "cool" and switch to a different server. If I do it in text mode, I'm flying blind. I just join the server and hope that it's connected.
Brotip half the time you join an idle server you don't care enough to check if it was connected until after you try to change items. In a normal game.

If it does disconnect, it's going to be quite a long time after you checked it last. Get over it, don't use the mode if you don't like no visuals, get out.
It's a choice to use -textmode Personally I have no problem as the servers I use don't suffer from frequent steam cloud disconnects.
I know that it's a choice, I wouldn't use it anyway, as I enjoy messing around in those servers a bit. I'm just pointing out a potential downside to it, so people would be warned. For me, by just joining random idle servers, half of them are either disconnected when I join or they disconnect shortly after I leave the computer. Sometimes I wish that the console had a timestamp feature so I could figure out when things happen. [editline]11:56PM[/editline]
If it does disconnect, it's going to be quite a long time after you checked it last. Get over it, don't use the mode if you don't like no visuals, get out.
The server will lose connection to Steam servers 100% of the time, that's a given fact. Some are disconnected when you join, some take minutes to disconnect, some take many hours. I understand that that's how idling works. However, there should be a simple way to see in the console if a server IS INITIALLY connected to Steam servers when you first join.
Maybe you people just shouldnt Idle.
We shouldn't, but we will anyway. It gives our computers more of a purpose when we leave them on without using them.
I meant
You people are not hardcore enough to just do it and not give a damn.
[editline]11:59PM[/editline] But yours works too.
But I am hardcore :saddowns:
Apparently not
Sometimes I wish that the console had a timestamp feature so I could figure out when things happen.
It does, but not IN the console itself. Console commands to get a console log and time stamp:
con_logfile console.log con_timestamp 1
Then check your console log file in ~\team fortress 2\tf\console.log It will be timestamped and all. If you launch TF2 again, it will just get appended at the bottom of the file.
That's really fucking useful. Thanks!
That's really fucking useful. Thanks!
You're welcome.
I'm glad that the community has geniuses such as you and Shugo.
When I first heard of -textmode, I thought it'd let me play in ASCII. I'm sad now.
personas
Thank you
I got two camera beards from this. I am pleased.
oh joy 2 backburners and a kgb.. /sarc [editline]07:53AM[/editline] and huntsman, and a scottish resistance just now...
I haven't idled before but now that there is a perfectly legal way I'm more tempted. You can get items from being spectator right? I don't want one of my class times to be horribly skewed.

When you spec idle, you sit on the "choose your team" menu. Not spectator team.
That is sadly how it works. When you die theres a somewhat chance you get an item.
You dont need to do ANYTHING after just doing "Connect to server". You can have the intro screen up the whole time. No need to die, your items just accumulate in the invalid slot section Bottom of the page

Wait, did it automatically join me into a team?
You just admitted your friend to be a gigantic faggot (ie pirating Gmod) because I'm pretty sure you can't run two Source games at once. And textmode still counts as a game. Or you're a terrible, terrible liar.
Oh really? You cant run the SAME game twice....
Wait, did it automatically join me into a team?
No, but you don't need to join a team/class. You only need to connect to a server. It doesn't matter what you do after you click "connect". If you're asking WHY you're on a team [if that's what you've noticed], well, some idle servers put people in a random team/class right upon connecting.
When you spec idle, you sit on the "choose your team" menu. Not spectator team.
Doesn't matter, if you're on the server it works
That is sadly how it works. When you die theres a somewhat chance you get an item.
You get items even if you don't die. It's just steam saves stats when you die, thus items drop then.
