I just got a hat by using this method for about 30 minutes.

I got a Brigade Helm overnight, and was rather happy, as I hadn't gotten a hat drop since the first set of hats (Batter's and Football, crafted into a Billycock now). So, with my good luck, I decided to idle while I was at school, hoping for something else good.
Came home, looked at my backpack, and found I had gotten another Brigade Helm. :downs:
Oh well, at least I was lucky enough to get two hats, right?
Does idling in textmode decrease memory usage?
no
How do you pick teams/classes with this "textmode" mode? Or do you just spectate? I also second the question above me.
^ Can someone answer this question?
^ Can someone answer this question?
You are on the MOTD screen when idling on it.
You are on the MOTD screen when idling on it.
Does that shit matter? I'm not an expert on idling.
This is the same as idling on a real server, you won't get any magical drop rate boost by using this
Yeah, but I've never been on an idiling server before.
Is it possible to create a listen server in this mode?
More importantly, can you get items in a listen server? I've heard people saying yes and no on the issue.

You can, but there's some setup involved. Search the TF2 section for 'How to make your own Idle server' and that should tell you.
I got another hat last night! :D

OH NO! A PIRATE HAS BEEN FOUND! WHATEVER SHALL WE DO?! I KNOW! MORALFAG MODE ENABLE!!!
Being from Poland means being a pirate, is that what you mean?
Cool.
I was able to play L4D2 while using this.
Pretty cool :D
Good idling session today using this...

to the guy with the camera beard

Did I join a server, randomly kill myself and unlock a crap load of items?
Mass confusion followed.

yayyy
camera beard still has the same drop rate as weapons
I've crafted about 7 or 8 Camera Beards together so far, not as common as weapons but much more common than hats.
I wrote up the following and posted to the official TF2 forums, but it was quickly deleted.
Textmode how-to:
1. Right-click desktop, select New, Shortcut.
2. Browse for Steam.exe, e.g., "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" and click Next.
3. Choose a name for the shortcut and click Finish.
4. Locate the newly created shortcut, right-click and select Properties.
5. To the Target field add
-applaunch 440 -textmode +connect serverIP:serverPort
6. Click OK.
At this point one can simply double-click the newly created shortcut to launch TF2 in "textmode".
The Target line in the shortcut's properties should now look like:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 440 -textmode +connect ServerIP:ServerPort
For additional optimization add the following command line switches:
-nosound -nopreload
Here's what my latest Target line looks like:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 440 -textmode -nosound -nopreload -noshaderapi +connect serverIP:serverPort
