On a more serious note, why the hell do you care? If the game was paid, most of the people who now like it probably wouldn't have even played it in the first place. I didn't really care until I saw that you get a TF2 hat with it, and after playing it for a bit I liked the game and even met a new friend while playing the game.
So you're pretty much saying you wanted the game to be paid just to suit your desires, and completely ignore the the fact that it introduced people to a fun game they might enjoy for a long time to come?
And seeing as you have the Sam and Max items, no doubt you also wanted it to be paid so that it would be rarer and you could be one of the "few".

It's preference. Maybe I don't like seeing the same hat on every other player's head? Especially one that is rather unfitting. Yes, the game is good but if it costed a little money, there would be less people splewing around with the same hat. It's not the matter of disliking the hat, it's just seeing everyone wearing it will get old. And since this deal appears to be endless, I can say we're in for quite a predicament of alien hats.

Excuse me for wanting to buy a great game just when Valve puts off a promotion with hats and items. I don't very much care for the items, all I know is that Sam & Max Season 3 kicks major ass.

I have to agree with Keychain there, It feels kinda weird to see parasites everywhere. Y'see, the Sam and Max items are pretty cool because not everyone got it. If everyone was running around with max severed head, it wouldn't look good. And I'm not talking about the hat itself, because it is good, the parasite hat is cool too, but when everyone has something so specific with such a unique design, it feels kinda awkward. The gibus doesn't suffer from this because it's just a broken top hat, I don't mind seeing the gibus everywhere, it's so common, the design is far from being unique anyway.
I don't even see Max's Severed Head that much these days. Mainly because:
1. You had to pay for something in order to get it.
2. The deal was a week long.
Maybe they don't have to make Alien Swarm cost money, but they could perhaps make the deal limited. But with the achievement and all I don't think that is likely to happen.

I was kinda hoping it would be difficult, I never even read what was required before getting ingame. I was pretty disappointed it was just going through 2 co-op missions. I was even more disappointed when I looked at my friends playing and saw they were all playing easy mode. Bunch of pussies.
Later on, I beat the campaign on normal mode. Infection fucking sucks, we had to use 2 healing pods to cure an infection.
