I don't think it's a mistake. It's common for professionals to wear it backwards.

It is more likely that it was to give him more personality than any "professional" preference.
My dad is a 7 foot tall version of the Engineer.
Wears it the same way just straightened.
only reason Engie wears it tilted is because all the characters do things unorthodox.
Gotta admit though, he looks pretty professional when it's worn right.
