Achievements 2.0 - It's not the 5 second generator crap!
If I can hit K at any time and explode, it isn't a cheat.
Ohhh okay. I remember seeing it on a changelog, but it was for L4D instead. Since that you used to be able to use that command to explode as a Boommer while your near people.
Not all achievements have to be accomplishments. Even some of the Valve achievements would make no sense. (Spies Like us, Consolation Prize anyone?) A few are merely meant as easter eggs, little nods to the community. Others will be achievements which for retaining your awesomeness you'd try to avoid. Or as a completionist you go for them. What you do with them is not my decision.
Hatchievements on the other hand are meant as a minor introduction to the hat mechanics too. Obviously not all of them are, but I felt that at least completing the item sets should be an achievement.
The hat ones aren't too simple to make, since while you can easily get a hat nowadays, getting the right hats for an achievement will be a lot more tedious. What would be a better idea for those, I do not know yet. Check back later for the results of the think train.
I can see your point with some of them, though.
TBH i would love to see some more challenging achievements.
TBH i would love to see some more challenging achievements.
I don't want to see achievements in incredibly specific circumstances, though. I still haven't gotten the "light a spy as he taunts with the disguise kit" in 200 hours of Pyro.
Heh, Rated Late, Mate.
I really hope that gets in.

If you're not already aware, you can ignite people doing the spycrab taunt, too.
No pyro achivement for extinguish allies on fire?
I am dissapoint.

quite indeed
[release]Air Gardening: Kill an enemy with a Market Gardener crit.[/release]
[release]Until Death: Heal a wounded teammate while you are flying to your death [/release]
[release]Broken doesn't mean useless: Kill an enemy with your broken bottle[/release]
[release]Speed Burst: Rocket Jump in quick succession to gain speed[/release]
Needs an unusual hat achievement :P
Steamrolled
Kill the entire enemy team at the start of the round before the middle point is captured, then win the round.
Quickscoper
Kill someone right after scoping.
Obedient Engineer
Put a dispenser near someone who called for a dispenser.
A lot of these are just plain ridiculous and quite seemingly impossible to detect, I don't think the game can predict if a person were to be killed if you didn't heal them at a certain moment.
I like these a lot, but most of them just seem either too easy to really be an achievement, too ridiculous to be reasonable without farming, rather arbitrary or easily farmable. Here's a list:
Scout
Rusty Aim - Easy, farmable.
Gun to a swordfight - Arbitrary, not a lot of people have the Three-Rune Blade.
Soldier
Friends With Benefits - Arbitrary, ridiculously hard outside of farming.
Pyro
Mr Fahrenheit - Kinda arbitrary, but at the same time, I like the reference.
W+M2 - Arbitrary, ridiculously hard without farming, and the kinda thing you'd annoy people by doing during serious play.
Demoman
Don't get ahead of yourself - Kinda hard to get without farming, except maybe on a melee only server. However, I do like this, because of the troll potential of killing someone with 9 heads and getting the achievement from stealing their heads, just as they were about to get their 10th head and the achievement.
Silent Blast - Incredibly arbitrary, too easy to really be an achievement, easy to farm and frankly, rather pointless.
Heavy
These are all good, no problems here.
Engi
Minor Malfunction - Eh, it's kinda hard to get, but I guess this one was intended as one of those "Don't bother trying, just wait til you get it by accident" achievements.
Ninjaneer - Ridiculously hard without farming. Hell, even with farming, it'd be kinda hard to get, unless you had damaged all enemies to very low health beforehand.
Sniper
Stab Masters Showdown - While I like the idea behind this achievement, it is rather arbitrary, and if you tried to get it, it would turn into a never-ending STAB STAB STAB duel.
Survival of The Smartest - Ridiculously easy, I'd get this every time I play Frontlines Sniper.
2Snipers2Jars - This one isn't too bad, but it's frankly kind of rare that two Snipers that are using Jarate actually fight with anything other than Sniper Rifles. But if two Snipers with Jarate did happen to fight with something other than Sniper Rifles from opposite ends of the map, then they'd get it easily.
Against all odds - The only reason I don't like this is that it's completely dpendant on having the entire Croc-O-Style set.
Medic
Dove Hunt - I like the idea, but it is kind of arbitrary, and would be hard to get without farming or doing a tauntkill battle on the server, and Scouts are rare during tauntkill battles.
Spy
Spy sappin' my sandwich - The only problem with this is that it'd be kinda hard to get, and you'd most liekly get it by accident. and depending on the health of your disguise, could reveal you're a Spy. (IE, if you have low health but your disguise has full, picking it up would cause suspiscion on how you used a health pickup with full health.)
Successful Infiltration and Successful Humiliation - Would be kind of hard to get, cause (maybe it's just me) it's hard enough to get a Medic to heal you, never mind think you're a worthy uber target. seeing as how you can't shoot. Although, disguising as Demo and going towards your own team's sentry nest would help. The two achievements are also rather redundant, as, if you get ubered by an enemy Medic, there's not much to do other than Spycrab.
General
War never changes - Why 2161? Seems rather arbitrary.
Rated Late, Mate - Again, the number seems arbitrary. Cause it's the number of hours in a day?
Last Stand - Seems rather hard, but maybe cause it's vague. What do you mean by "hunting you down"?
Spychecker United - Seems rather hard to get but at the same time, easily farmable.
Hatchievements
They all seem rather pointless, easy or arbitrary to me. You shouldn't really get an achievement for crafting or painting.
Huh, seems there were problems with a lot more than I first thought. Needless to say, however, that these problems don't necessarily mean they wouldn't get in, they're all just my opinion, and I think the same thing about many of the achievements actually in-game. The only thing stopping these from being added is Valve's apparent phobia of adding new achievements in groups of more than 8. :v:

There's already an achievement for healing someone right before they take fall damage that would've killed them had you not healed them.
[release]Fashionable: get a hat for every class (all-class hats not included)[/release]
[release]Acid rain: throw your Mad Milk at an enemy already coated in Jarate, while he is bleeding[/release]
[release]The Übermensch: As a medic, simultaneously uber 3 team mates
Josef Mangled: Kill 4 enemies within 30 seconds using the Bonesaw[/release]

The Three-Rune Blade is craftable. I wouldn't tie in achievements to promo items that you can't even get anymore.

Friends With Benefits - Arbitrary, ridiculously hard outside of farming.
Pyro
Mr Fahrenheit - Kinda arbitrary, but at the same time, I like the reference.

Ninjaneer - Ridiculously hard without farming. Hell, even with farming, it'd be kinda hard to get, unless you had damaged all enemies to very low health beforehand.
I think you should redefine your definition of 'ridiculously hard.' My initial idea was 50, since I see this happen all the time.
I'll think about changing this to a counter-style achievement, like Consolation Prize.
I feel so tempted to put a 'wrong' video here, but that would mess up the quote and the post. So do me a favour and look up "you're wrong" on youtube.
If you are overhealed enough, you can survive an uncharged headshot. Though I suppose Croc-O-Stylers can take the easy way out here.
Medic
Dove Hunt - I like the idea, but it is kind of arbitrary, and would be hard to get without farming or doing a tauntkill battle on the server, and Scouts are rare during tauntkill battles.
Spy

The two achievements are also rather redundant, as, if you get ubered by an enemy Medic, there's not much to do other than Spycrab.
These 3 achievements, and actually almost all Spy achievements depend on the intelligence and/or attentionspan of the enemy. If there's a troll-medic, a blind one, or you simply did SO MUCH of a good job that you completely earned their trust, this one is not impossible.
General
War never changes - Why 2161? Seems rather arbitrary.
I don't think I should elaborate on this one.
Rated Late, Mate - Again, the number seems arbitrary. Cause it's the number of hours in a day?
Last Stand - Seems rather hard, but maybe cause it's vague. What do you mean by "hunting you down"?
Technically, you could replace "hunting you down" with "eating sandviches in front of you", "shaking his rump at you" or "spamming Schadefreude taunts at you". I thought "hunting you down" was just descriptive enough.
Spychecker United - Seems rather hard to get but at the same time, easily farmable.
Every achievement can be farmed. It's no reason to hold back
Hatchievements

Achievements being arbitrary is not necessarily a bad thing. If that wouldn't be the case, what's the point in putting them in in the first place? They are meant as an objective of sorts.
Poll time, people. Should I remove the item set achievements? Rate agree if you think I should, rate disagree if you think I shouldn't. Rate anything else if you want to stand out.
The Three-Rune Blade is craftable. I wouldn't tie in achievements to promo items that you can't even get anymore.
Oh yeah, forgot about that. Still, not a lot of people bother crafting promos, especially not if they don't have specific recipes.
I play quite often like this, yet I'm far from the worst player in the match. No bragging intended.
Hm, I still see it as a, well, not arbitrary, but rather weird achievement. To a certain extent, it's kinda like the achievements from L4D where you have to do an entire campagin under a certain condition. (Only using Pistols, not startling the Witch, not using medkits, etc etc) I dunno, maybe it's just cause I suck at airblasting. :v:
I think you should redefine your definition of 'ridiculously hard.' My initial idea was 50, since I see this happen all the time.
Yeah, I do kind of over- and misuse "ridiculously", but 10 kills in 5 seconds? I don't play Ninjaneer much but in my experience, I usually don't even 1 kill in 5 seconds of building a mini-sentry.
I feel so tempted to put a 'wrong' video here, but that would mess up the quote and the post. So do me a favour and look up "you're wrong" on youtube.

Did not know this. Interesting.
These 3 achievements, and actually almost all Spy achievements depend on the intelligence and/or attentionspan of the enemy. If there's a troll-medic, a blind one, or you simply did SO MUCH of a good job that you completely earned their trust, this one is not impossible.
True, but I rarely encounter these Medics. I guess these are dependant on player.
I don't think I should elaborate on this one.
Mkay.
Technically, you could replace "hunting you down" with "eating sandviches in front of you", "shaking his rump at you" or "spamming Schadefreude taunts at you". I thought "hunting you down" was just descriptive enough.
Ah, right. So baiscally just kill an enemy during humiliation while on the losing team? That clears it up, that's fairly easy.
Every achievement can be farmed. It's no reason to hold back
True, but some are harder than others. That specific achievement, isn't actually that bad, it's just the fact that it's hard to get regularly but easy to get if you have a buddy willing to help you. Again, it's subjective to the player, as I don't use melee that often.
I see your point with this one. Maybe I'll remove the item set ones, though I'm not entirely removing Hatchievements.
I think you should, but those weren't really the ones that seemed the most pointless to me. Crafting or painting a hat isn't really that much of an achievement. The idea of Hatchievements is not a bad one, but the specific examples aren't that good. The Jealousy and Envy ones are good, but for those who already have a lot of hats (like me, I have a hat for all classes) they seem rather pointless. And, for Envy, I don't think it's such a good idea to reference the Halocaust again. Maybe make it "Kill someone who is wearing an Unusual while you are not" as Unusuals are generally more wanted than the Halo.
Achievements being arbitrary is not necessarily a bad thing. If that wouldn't be the case, what's the point in putting them in in the first place? They are meant as an objective of sorts.
True, but the thing is, achievements, in themselves, are rather abritrary but then there are arbitrary achievements, the type of achievements where you see it and wonder "Why the hell is this an achievement? How is it an achievement to do this other than blind luck?" An example of this would be "Do you have a light?", the Pyro achievement for lighting a Spy on fire while he's doing the disguise kit taunt. The only way you can get this achievement is blind luck, or farming, much like your own "Friends with Benefits".
Oh look, it's the Great Wall of Chi-no, wait, that's just my quote.
Yeah, I do kind of over- and misuse "ridiculously", but 10 kills in 5 seconds? I don't play Ninjaneer much but in my experience, I usually don't even 1 kill in 5 seconds of building a mini-sentry.
10 kills in 5 seconds? Dohoho. I think I didn't explain it good enough. It's a total of 10 kills, not a reenaction of World War I.

Though the Halocaust was a terrible point in history, I see no reason not to keep this achievement.
However, what's done is done, and we probably should let it rest. The unusual version is a good idea.
Hey, im just having fun here.
Honor Among Thieves: Backstab an enemy spy as he is about to backstab a teammate.
Looks like some people here like the Mantreads VERY much...

I've thrown all item sets out of the window. This should clear up the achievement lists a bit, and hopefully Hatchievements can get to it's full potential.
10 kills in 5 seconds? Dohoho. I think I didn't explain it good enough. It's a total of 10 kills, not a reenaction of World War I.
Oh right, that makes much more sense. For some reason, I can't read properly, and my brain is automatically assuming the things that make least sense.
