If you're wondering what Valve got from this deal, Weta made them a working replica level one Sentry for their lobby around 7 months ago.
WETA screwed up the sounds so it uses the unpacking sound instead of the reload sound and WETA uses custom software so Valve can not fix it themselves but have to wait for WETA to fix it. No idea if this has changed since I was there but hey its kinda funny that no one noticed the mistake till after the WETA guys left.

I'm pretty sure WETA makes a 3D render of the items they produce before they produce them. It's easier to make a 3D model than it is to make a real model, and then have to edit it for changes and stuff. I would be very surprised if WETA did not have at least one 3D artist on full time staff
Of course they have one. It's not working otherwise. Valve still made the models if I read the blog right.
Of course they have one. It's not working otherwise. Valve still made the models if I read the blog right.
They did a pretty good job making them, then. Very high quality.
Yep. I was pretty excited when I heard, that those new weapons even have new animations, sounds, taunts etc. I haven't seen such high-quality items from Valve for quite some time.
A few questions. So who made these Dr. Grordbort items? As far as I'm aware, WETA Workshops doesn't make any video games so I could possibly assume none of their employees are familiar with 3D modeling. In addition, this update is obviously not just a simple hat, misc item, and 2 weapons which could be feasibly submitted by some of the regular Emporium modders. For example, it's feasible that an Emporium modder could model a Conjurer's Cowl or model the entire Witcher 2 promotion item set and submit it. However this update is a lot more. New firing and reloading animations have been made for both the Cow Mangler 5000 and the The Righteous Bison. The Soldier has a new taunt when the Cow Mangler 5000 is equipped. Unused animations or taunts have even been spotted through the Source SDK model viewer. This update is completely unlike Valve and unlike TF2's regular promotion items. It's much more polished and thorough than the regular update. Kill icons, however good/bad they are, are used. New animations were made and I was honestly expecting the Bison to reuse shotgun animations. Weapons were given unique stats and properties instead of being reskins (Nessie's Nine Iron, Postal Pummeler, Three-Rune Blade, etc). Some bugs are left to be worked out, such as potential stat balancing or performance issues with the new weapons. (Be that lack of LODs or inefficiency with particle effect processing, or whatever) If what I think is true, why is Valve wasting their time creating advertisement promotion items for a company that (to my knowledge) doesn't create video games? Couldn't that time be better spent making in-house TF2 styled Engineer items because according to Valve's own words, no Engineer packs have passed their strict quality assurance tests. In addition, if Valve did make these items, exactly how much money are they getting paid here? Because Dr. Grordbort's items are a promotion for a non-video game company, does that also mean that given enough money other non-video game companies can continue to use and abuse TF2 as a channel for advertisement? Could Nike, the sports shoe giant, pay Valve to create Nike tennis shoe misc items for Scout, for example? And yes it is a promotion, although a little different from the regular pre-purchase promotion. Dr. Grordbort's logo is all over the place on TF2's site and these items serve as a direct advertisement for TF2 players to buy products from WETA workshop's site. It's no different than Conjurer's Cowl being an item to advertise TF2 players to buy Magicka and/or the Magicka Nippon DLC.
Dumbest post I've ever read. You do realize the guys at WETA and Valve are really good friends, right? The guys at WETA were the ones who created that life-sized sentry replica Valve featured on the TF2 blog not to long ago. One of the guys from WETA modelled the Voodoo Juju and Spine-Chilling Skull. They've done special effects for movies like Lord of the Rings and King Kong. I think they know a little bit about 3D modelling and animation. Also, there are plenty of people from the Emporium who could easily create stuff of this quality or better and implement it in the game. It's really not that big of a deal at all. A few models, animations, and particle effects aren't the most difficult thing ever to do. Anyone with a basic knowledge of modelling could accomplish it if they had the time and put the effort in.
Well if they're such good friends, why didn't they make an entire game based on Dr. Grordbort's? I've wanted one for a long time. Imagine, hunting big game in the Venusian Jungles! Glorious battles with laser tanks!
Oh it was WETA who made that! Oh god, they just keep on getting more awesome and awesome!
Regardless of what you think of the update and the soldier weapons, people can't deny WETA does good work. The detail on those model weapons is amazing.
I don't know where everyone is getting the idea that WETA Workshop has announced they're making TF2 props. I know I want them to and I have a feeling they eventually will but they've never said anything like that. At the moment these are the 3 big licensing deals Valve has that we know about. WETA Workshop did Gollum and all the effects for LOTR and King Kong. I say they have a couple of 3D artists... [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] Also Mike Morasky used to work at WETA. Yeah. The soundtrack-brainiac can also model. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline]
Mike Morasky Composer Morasky's life and career looks alot like one of the post-modern audio collages he is so fond of creating. Guitar player in a full-time bar band in Montana as a teen, award winning experimental composer in Tokyo, audio hardware programmer in Sillicon Valley, underground art rocker touring the world, 3d animator and director for television, electronic audio collage artist in France and Japan, visual fx artist on the Lord of the Rings and Matrix Trilogies, AI animation instructor at an art college and currently he is applying some combination of all these things to games at Valve. I live in San Diego and go to Comic-Con every year. The one year I decide to miss Comic-Con for vacation, I miss out on a TF2 cross-over thingy... :suicide: I wanted to take a picture standing next to the Solider :(
Dr. Grordbort's is a tiny company, seriously
They made the weapon props for District 9, among other films. Somehow, I doubt they're that small.
They made the weapon props for District 9, among other films. Somehow, I doubt they're that small.
I loved that movie :v:
They made the weapon props for District 9, among other films. Somehow, I doubt they're that small.
Just because a company's small, doesn't mean they can't produce amazing stuff. Blur Studios, who's made the cinematic trailers for games like Fable III, SWTOR and Batman Arkham City, has at the most 150 folks, and they've been nominated for an Oscar for their animation work.
I'm glad we have a proper new weapon, instead of a vanilla one with the model and stats adjusted.
Dammit. The new weapons weren't messing with my performance until everyone started using them. Now it's ridiculous.
There is no reason not to download my particle fix in the Emporium if you're having this problem.
The particles looks cool, so no thanks. I'm predicting boxes, loads of them.
There is no reason not to download my particle fix in the Emporium if you're having this problem.
I downloaded it. It helps SO MUCH. I don't lag every time I shoot/try to rocket jump. Thanks! That's what, 3 of your mods that are amazing? The devil/angle on pyro's shoulders, the space core sandman ball, and this. :D
Recurracy for president
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2012076 I guess Ned didn't post this here yet, but sounds like we ARE getting more stuff out of the rockets. At least, I think. We are definetly getting more items from WETA though.
There is no reason not to download my particle fix in the Emporium if you're having this problem.
Apparently it don't work on sv_pure servers. Blurgh
I thought Psyke would post it After all, he's the one who passed it on to me lol
Oh well. I don't even know WHEN we can expect the items. Hopefully sooner than later.
Oh well. I don't even know WHEN we can expect the items. Hopefully sooner than later.
Probably not very soon, unless they have the model and stats ready to ship.
Probably not very soon, unless they have the model and stats ready to ship.
They very well could since three rockets were lost. The Soldier's items could be a sort of public beta test. Work out the bugs in the new systems and such, see what needs to be fixed up and such.
