I did a couple more icons (syringe gun and bonesaw) and took a better picture (1280x720 this time).

Still looking good? :buddy:
One thing I'm wondering about is how to go about doing the hats. I'm thinking maybe I should just leave them alone entirely; hats are cosmetic and thus they probably look better in the backpack with their normal colorful appearances.
If you did this for every weapon, that would be so kick ass!
You could vectorize those images of the weapons that are already in the game to make them look better.
Well so far I seem to be fine and efficient enough with just blowing them up and tracing over them by hand. For some reason I find it fun just taking my time and tracing...tracing...fill tool...tracing... :buddy:
Anyway, I've finished the Medic:
Or make them in Illustrator to give that true, smooth taste.
"make them in Illustrator" == "vectorize"

They look great for the most part. The medi gun handle and the Kritz handle look a bit blurry, and the bonesaw's tooth edge a little more than midway up looks a little bit messed up. Not a huge deal, just pointing things out in case you care to fix them.

Most of that is due to the scaling of the icons. I make large, 512x512 versions first and then scale them down to 128x128, which the game then scales up a bit (depending on the resolution the game is running at). Rest assured I drew all those edges nice and pretty on the high-res versions...that's just the limitations of turning them into loadout icons. :frown:

Is the solution to make larger icons (larger than 512x512)?

Well unlike other textures in the game, the loadout/backpack menus rely on the icons to be exactly 128x128, or else they appear huge in the menu and go way outside of their boxes. That's why Valve made 128x128 versions of every default icon despite there already being 512x512 versions in the GCF (for use on the "item found" screen).
Unless you mean drawing them in even higher res to begin with, but that's just pointless since I'm going to scale them all down to 128x128 in the end anyway.

Well I'm just curious what the problem is. Do the pure (png) icons at 128x128 appear EXACTLY as they appear in the backpack? If so, then you can just go in and fix them up.

Fix what up? The parts you mentioned look fine to me. Those edges only look rough because the game is scaling them up from a scaled down state; there's nothing I can do about it. The default icons look a bit rough in the loadout menu too. It's just how it works.
They look better in the backpack rather than the loadout, but I'm taking my screens from the loadout because I can put them side-by-side with the default weapons.

Shugo do you have a community weapon yet? I really think you should get one.
You're a positive contributor.

Begone from this thread of worship, foul demon!
im just kidding, i like them. it is so aesthetic . you should make the hats this way. it will be hard but it will be more aesthetic

He isn't fussed about getting one he said in one of his posts
Just make bones/joints/whatever they're called on your application and then use the $jigglebone QC command.
So what do you think? Of course for icons that are just projectiles (like the rocket or the Sco Res stickybomb) I'll just make a new icon from scratch featuring the actual weapon. But before I do that, of course, I'd like to know if people would actually want it. :v:
Try taking the killicon and colouring it like the weapon, i'm interested to see what that looks like.
I never made anything related to modeling, so detailed instructions would be appreciated.

Is it possible to use another program besides 3DSMax?
no.
You can use any model program that has bones in it.
You can use any model program that has bones in it.
shhh he has to use 3ds max, its the only way!
I made my hats in Milkshape 3D.

Do these replace the bucket icons you see in game when selecting your weapon, or just in the backpack?
Also are you going to do the rest of them?

Are you gonna do hats and misc items too?

Yes, he's going to do all of them. That is just what he has so far.
