And actually modeling is like a puzzle. You need to apply the right modifiers to the right shapes to get your desired shapes. It's like a skill. Getting them in TF2 on the other hand can be somewhat annoying as many things can go wrong, and is something you need to have done successfully a few times and then anyone can do it.
There was a thread floating around teaching you how to get stuff into TF2. As for modeling, you should choose the software you like most (I recommend 3D Studio Max) and find some good tutorials.
