...To make a command or something that stops the rendering so you can idle without your computer being all slowed down? seting DX to anything higher than 9.0c?
Not that I know of. But if you alt-tab it shouldn't render anything as far as I know. That and getting a fps-config or just sett all settings to the lowest will helpen lighten your load
when i press alt+tab i still see stuff going on around me so i dont think that works
Don't think you can render nothing. You can however use SourceTools' idle mode thing that runs on lowest graphics in a 640x480 window, and minimize that window. Currently using 346MB RAM/1-4% CPU (Athlon II X2 250).

I think you can change how far the game will render on the z axis? Or maybe that was something you had to have cheats for...I can't remember that well
Add -sw -noborder to the launch options. The game plays in full-screen but you can do other stuff without it minimizing TF2.
