People idle when they are not playing because that way they can rack up game time hours and have a better chance at a aesthetic item that contributes nothing to gameplay but making you look flashy.
People love gimmicks that you 'bought' in-game.
Valve made them as a joke they didn't need to put a fucking hat.
Gee seems that all you care about is aesthetic appeal and not about core game play.
Who honestly gives a fuck? I still play the game and I like looking good while doing it.
You sound like a butthurt gibus wearer.
That's right, they don't.
What's your point? Because all I'm getting from this is that, instead of playing the game as it was intended to be played, you leave the game on and go stand around for six hours on a server where you're meant to stand around for six hours while you sleep. Then you wake up and say hey look I got a super awesome fedora let me just equip it and wear it like I earned it.
You didn't earn shit. You were asleep. If you idled to get something as arbitrary as a hat, you don't deserve something so simple anyway.
What are you so mad about you can't "earn" hat's they're random
Idling is a waste of good electricity. :colbert:

i don't even own tf2 bro

But that's my point. They're RANDOM. Therefore you have just as much chance of getting one while playing as you do just standing there doing nothing. And then when you get one everyone acts like you're the fucking biggest object of envy and regardless of whether you idled for it or not they think that idling is the final solution when their sorry ass can't get a hat through normal playing.
Have you people noticed the strange superstitions that stem from idling?
"If you join a friendly fire server you get more drops."
"If you join team spectator you get more drops."
"If you idle with nothing equipped you get more drops."
It's like an old wives' tale, something that's pointless and has no base in logic but still catches on. No, putting a knife under your pillow won't cut pain in half while you give birth, and no, doing an estranged video game voodoo ritual will not get you hats faster.
Well since I'm desperate enough,I'll try this.
Also xpod,I told Lakister that I'll call you both in about hour for L4D2.
Keychain,I'm dissapoint. :colbert:
Lol, have fun wasting your time.
Stupid.

So is running the servers you are currently idling on. I idled once just to see what this foolish squabble was about. It's not really that great or amazing. I have one hat currently, and I'm just thinking.
"Cool. I got a hat. Too bad I didn't get anything that can BLOW THE ENEMIES FACE OFF."
I remember once playing on a server when someone got a Soldier's stash, and he was happy and bragging. I got a Direct hit several minutes later, and blew him up with it. To put it simply,
You're hat doesn't stop American, Scottish, Russian, German, French, or Australian bullets.
So who cares?
You got a weapon which is infinitely more common and received through milestones, he has a rarer Soldier hat that generally doesn't affect his gameplay, he probably blew your ass up later or would if it were a regular server
hey look, another hat argument thread

This. Some days people get insanely lucky with drops, and they start to think that whatever they were doing the night before totally effects it. It doesn't.

hey look, another useless post

3. After 10-20 minutes or so, go to red or blue and spawn.

I thought idle was when you was away from your pc. Why just not play the game when you are at your pc?
OP is dumb,not bit surprise
Bawwww hats.
Idling is stupid unless you're a 24/7 server host.

the first time i played tf2, i was playing in a server, everyone was getting drops like bullshit, i was saying: "why is everyone getting so much stuff, i want a beard too! :D", minutes later i got a soldier's stash, i wasn't happy or mad since i got it before the gastly gibus, all i said was: "oh cool! is this good?"
everyone raged at me for some strange reason :[
