This may be VERY late, but why is Smashman the OP. Nobody seems to like it and he's beginning to overdue the "HURR EVERYTHING HAS TO BE PERFECT" thing.
On topic. How long in general does it take to learn modelling? I think the most amount of experience i've had is with blender and that was a few years back in a modeling section of a class i took.
And then people suddenly start making Dota 2 promos

Well, I've been modelling for about a year or more, and I'm still learning new things lol. So, I guess quite some time, but basic modeling is fairly easy. Takes alot of skill/practice to optimize an object for a game.

It depends on the person. If you can't image 3 dimensions at once then it will take much longer.
Smashman in being control-freak shocker.
ANYWHO, trying to get inspiration to model something...
Help us model the Control point hardhat? :) The satellite at least? I assume the battery attachment, logo and hardhat will all be a cinch to model.

As long as you keep practicing it shouldn't take long.
brb making blood seeker headdress for demoman
Aw well. I think the best i've made was a table with a shark in a bowl on it. Also i know how to make a one block airplane! Fuck yeah, blockie modelling!
I'm thinking of just making my big choppa neutral colors If I can't get team color to work.

Time is subjective. Practice and hands-on application should NEVER be lacking. Most of all, you need to do it not because cool people do it nor because of the reward but because you enjoy it. That way, even if you didn't get the reward you would still find yourself modelling months or even years after. Been modelling for 5 months now and im happy to say i'm still enjoying it.

And you've made some very impressive things for only 5 months of work.
...That reminds me, I need to start learning soon.

That is still being tweaked. All the rotations on the weapons are off and i'm having bugs on the blu version of the coat.
Quick video update:
I think I will stop working on it, and start all over again, because: it sux...
What hardhat?
Me and like two other people were talking about making a control point hardhat, based off of the lo-fi and the control point podcast, which IMO is better. It would be a normal white, idk maybe yellow or something hardhat, and have a battery pack or a small little mini briefcase (one of the running show jokes/segments) with wires that connect to a satellite on top of the hat instead of a tower.
So picture this:

With the Control Point logo on the front just like Kritzcast's is, and then a little mini briefcase or something on the side, and this kind of satellite on the top of the hat.

Excuse me for the size of the picture.

When you do redo it, make the animation an uppercut sort of animation
