from what time recolors are good stuff?
only good pony stuff i saw was from sparkwire, and i have to admit it was well-made and with effort into it, even if i don't like MLP. not like those horrible eye-melting recolors that gamebanana producing.

Mark a seam on the edge somewhere, it'll unwrap properly then.

i don't really comprehend what you meant by having the outer edge as all triangles. Did you mean that the outer FACE are all in triangles? also to add your seam on those outer edge you need to select the box below...

Then control + right click on the edge you wish to highlight

Also your faces are mixed up. Some are facing outward and some are facing inward that's why they appear as broken triangles on the UV. Select the WHOLE shape (press "L" on that blade thing to select the whole object) and press "recalculate" then unwrap again
