If you want, you can remove the grainy effect from the AO by enabling AO in the World tab with Add selected, and then setting Gather to Approximate, with Pixel cache enabled.

I know nothing, but
If you overlapped some of those hexagons exactly, could you make them bigger (and higher res) at the cost of repeating the texture on each spike. I don't know if this is what you want to do, but I think it might be worth considering?

Well he's half right, if you overlap them you can save space and make other shit higher res
they're so small I'm going to say there's no point. Especially as they'll have to have no AO to share that space properly.

If I read it right, he was replying to someone saying the file was added, and the file was added during the WAR update. I BELIEVE he meant to say the CODING was added, therefor modifying it, which he must've mistook as it being added altogether.
