Along with being an artistic theme from the time period, the comic that went with the items, in my opinion, perfectly explains the soldier getting the items. They fit his personality well enough, as well. Yes, they could fit other classes like the Engineer (for being lasers and "advanced technology"), but I think they fit Soldier best. The model fits by TF2's standards, as well. They exaggerate certain features of the weapon to draw attention to them, while scaling other unimportant features down, and removing features that aren't important at all, like the individual bolts on the weapon. The texture fits as well, featuring the well known brush strokes. It also has a decent amount of wear and tear around the edges, like most of the TF2 weapons do.

the new laser weapons are "fitting" although i find that they look too serious. their models/ textures are too detailed. and the textures also don't seem cartoony enough. plus the soldier doesn't seem like the class that should be using laser weaponry.
