I feel like it could be a little too crazy, though. Like building a lvl3 aimed at enemy base a long distance away, and endlessly spamming tons of rockets and bullets at them. I guess Valve would find some way to counter this, though.

Snipers, airblast, soldiers, and spys, since your sentry is not movable,it's pretty easy to destroy.
Expanding on what this fine gentleman said, there can only be one active rt_camera entity at a time. Valve would have to rework their camera and display system if they wanted to implement something like this.
But if I am not mistaking this, it is an clientside entity or not? Because, as far as I know there is no rt_camera entity used anywhere in the game, so one per player would sustain perfectly.
I think it's a bit too futuristic in a way, back then I think cameras were really low res and black and white, right?
And how does the sentry perfectly distinguish blues from reds then?
Even nowdays we don't have any widely used system with enough reliability to be widely used to shoot people on it's own, so I think that color camera isn't something we should fend of too much.
But having some "Oldie color camera" filter on the sentry output would be classy
If I am not mistaken this could be done without any bandwidth increase due to the game already telling the client where the people are on the server. The sentry could be a clientside camera (like Gmod can have). The "camera" would just display what the game looks like from that perspective.
What about a engineer can control his sentry?
Making him unable to repair it while he does and some other drawbacks.
yea i got a problem with this i actualy builded a lvl 1 sentry but a god damn soldier came from back the sentry moves so slow to the target and boom i died and my sentry
I think it's a bit too futuristic in a way, back then I think cameras were really low res and black and white, right?
They had HD in the '60s you dolt.
They had HD in the '60s you dolt.
doubtful
RED and BLU are rich companies, I think that the engineer, that has discovered/bought teleportation, can get a color camera.
Maybe if a spy sapped it you would still get a few seconds until it burst into static so you can see the rough idea who the spy (if stupid) is disguised as and the general direction he runs in. It could be a little helpful. ;)

Static flicker for 3 seconds then the picture of a smiling spy face.
Static flicker for 3 seconds then the picture of a smiling spy face.
Whatever, you get the idea. :v:
I think the whole smiling spy face would be a big kick in the ass. I'd be fucking pissed every time.
Just because it seems like it's a "HURR HURR FAGGOT I SAPPED YOUR SENTRY", kinda like t-bagging in any game.
Static flicker for 3 seconds then the picture of a smiling spy face.
That would be win
This is a pretty sweet idea, although it would need to be spy wagging his finger at you and saying "Ah, ah, ah! You didn't say the magic word!" (+20 points to anyone who gets the reference)
I'm thinking of a random animation and audio file played when sapped.
"I broke your toys too"
"Ah yes, the man with the broken guns"
"Are you going to cry now"

Jurassic Park Uno.
And that would be awesome.
Pretty good idea.
And when it gets sapped the camera should go down a bit (Like the sentry does) and then go static, then go to the spy smiling. :v:
I already suggested this earlier this year. But I didn't make a thread, 'cause I'm lazy.

Thats the point in it...
I'm all for this idea; it would add another aspect to the Engineer, allowing for expanded game-play tactics and usefulness towards the team. For example, "Heavy/Medic combo coming in on the hay room" might be shouted by an Engineer spotting them taking down his sentry via camera.
Here's some pictures of the ETF sentry camera in case anyone wants to see how ETF did it.
Me away from the sentry:

Actually, the server already tells the client where everyone is in the map. This could be implemented with no bandwidth increase whatsoever. I think Valve can implement a system similar to Portal though.

why would they implant a system similar to portal's when you admit that it already works

Good, I wasn't able to get these pictures of my own, so thanks for this.
Looks like the important has been already said in this thread.
I am thinking that once I get to PC again (on N810 right now), I will refine an email to valve or something.

One of the things valve does is try to reduce network traffic. By filtering stuff you can't see nor hear from your current position it greatly reduces network traffic. If you have to filter from 2 different places, then the traffic is pretty much automatically decreases.
*I'm not 100% sure how and if they use this in TF2, but with that technology available I think it would be pretty silly not to use it.
I wager that wouldn't be too hard to fix. An interesting proposition, sir, I like it.
Stpo typig nlkei dat juts cuz u gtos a stopid avtar
Source has some problems with this actually. If you have a TV screen that's showing a live feed of something, you can only have one of them being rendered at a time. So if Valve implemented this, it would mean that maps couldn't do TV monitors. Also cameras don't show 3D skybox (IIRC).
Would be cool though.
In Garry's Mod, you can have a little window showing a RT camera anywhere you want on your screen, and it has no problem rendering anything
[editline]01:21PM[/editline]
Maybe the camera should be on the Dispenser though? (not really, actually, because people using it would block your sight of view)
Anyways someone's gotta e-mail this to the TF2 devs, it'd be a cool buff for the Engineer.
I'd like to have a feature like this, could be useful.
And when it gets sapped a picture of a grinning Spy is in its place. :smug:
Haha, we need this too!
