Okay guys here's how you rig properly in motion builder.
Also do not rename your bones, the bones in the dmx and the bones ingame must be exactly the same name.

Thanks so much for these, they've helped a whole bunch. That rigging thing looks very neat, I just did a quick job that allowed me to use existing animations but they way you set it up way better ;)
I'll have to check this last technique out later on when I get some time.

Who does Scout think he is, Vivec?
Cloud, I've got just one tutorial request, it's how do you transfer motion from one rig to another in motionbuilder?
(for endorphin)
I've done a few adjustments in 3DS Max, and it looks pretty neat, but it'd be cool if I didn't have to use Endorphin's crappy motion transfer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50D1BlE1KSs

Okay, I haven't really followed the SFM discoveries since the very early days, so tell me, is it possible to import a HL2 model and apply a VCD to it easily?

Again, thanks. These are very useful.

Process is the same for HL2 models as it is for TF2 models, as the beta has HL2's content already - no import required.

I mean, how do I spawn them actually? Is there a guide somewhere?
Follow the tutorial above to rig your tf2 character.
import another rig you want to apply animation from and make sure its also in the t-stance.
Characterise it.
go to the settings on your tf2 character, where you can select its rig type, and change it from control rig input, to character input, then select the input character.
Then plot your tf2 character to the control rig.
If the animation doesnt look right then one of your models wasn't in the right t-stance before characterising.
Crossing from mb > endorphin > mb i did it like this
animate in mb > plot it to an endorphin rig > export > import and finish the animation in endorphin > import back to mb > plot the animation back to the tf2 rig.

where you create an animation set there's an option that says add model, click that.
I don't even know how to create an animation set :byodood:
Right click the [del]clip[/del] shot, Create animation set.

Thank you :)
Now for a question which has probably been asked a thousand times, but, I deleted a shot and the puppet stayed there frozen — is there a way to delete it?
Yeah, with the DME Element Editor. Type in the model's name in Search field and hit enter - it should bring you to an element named after the character's model. Change the value of visible to 0 and see if your model disappears. If so, you can delete the element or leave it as-is.
Specifically, it should expand a tree that looks like "clipBin/sequence/subClipTrackGroup/tracks/Film/children/shot/scene/children/take1/children/player_YOURNAME/children/player_YOURNAME_World Models/children/MODELNAME_GameModel".
is it bad i get so much pleasure out of making shit in this party because and it crashes so much and i'm sadistic
okay last question for today (hopefully)
how do you increase the intensity of the depth of field?
So to do facial animations I need maya right?
I look at it more as a challenge - the tool has enough problems that managing to figure stuff out and produce results is rewarding.
okay last question for today (hopefully)

Search for aperture. Then just increase that value.
Make sure to also set the focal plane by holding F while in the camera's view, then dragging the mouse.

You can animate anything in SFM, it's just time consuming. Just add an animation set for the character then use the animation set editor - there's a Lipsyncing tutorial on the wiki.
Thank you very much.
Here's my very first use of the Animation Set Editor ever :v:

I don't really understand how to import VCDs and apply them onto a citizen model, it just disappears as soon as I import the VCD
So I'm silly and can't work this out, what ways would you guys get something from endorphin to a dmx

I don't think we've figured out how to actually apply a VCD to a model yet.

Yeah, and that's what I'm gonna improve on.
My videos are only 10 seconds but they are 1gb in size, what do you guys use to compress these? Or do you not?
Windows Movie Maker :smug:
yeah i upload 1gb files to youtube
only kidding just export tgas+wav, render as xvid avi in virtualdub
I remember compressing a 4Gb recording of JC2 down to like 450Mb with no loss in quality.
I'll look around my Pc and see what i used
A note to all who ever use dynamic lighting: I highly, highly, highly recommend setting these two commands before you do anything involving lights, it's a MASSIVE quality increase.
mat_depthbias_shadowmap 0
mat_slopescaledepthbias_shadowmap 2
lol I got kinda lazy towards the end of this one.
