Valve (Robin) did say at one time they wouldn't nickle and dime people, now they're just like Battlefield Heroes (which they even made fun of)

One thing I realized is that valve would have needed to sell hats in order to make trading work. Since I know I would have sold all my hats for money if trading came out by itself.

They know that because they have such loyal fans, that said fans will spend as much as valve asks them to for anything like coloring something yellow for $2.50.

I don't see why you guys are so mad about buying items in game. You can still get the items normally via crafting or random drops, so you aren't missing out. And I don't know about you, but I'm more than happy and willing to spend my money on anything Valve made. I have no problem whatsoever giving them my money, as I know it's going to be used in quality games and future content.
