Well at first I thought maybe he would be skilled enough to time the catch just right so that he ends up with his fingers going through the holes at the right time in the catch. Hey skunkrocker, I like the idea of a thin nail bat. It makes me think it won't have the "Hit yourself, idiot" attribute if it gets put in, since scout's pretty handy with a bat but not heavy maces.
I've got a couple of suggestions for the look of it. I'm thinking that aside from the handle, it could be two-toned and made of a lighter-colored wood. The thicker end of the bat could be a different color from the wood and have a bit of splintering and wear where the nails were hammered in.

Perhaps something like this to look more toastery and visually interesting (not that I mean it in a bad way, but the colors look plain and too simplistic)? The toaster looks a little too pristine for something that has a busted middle as well.
