You forgot to put /sarcasm at the end.
I'm not being sarcastic. Valve never did such thing. As I recall, the September 2nd blog post didn't contain a single instance of the word "idle" or "idler" or "idling". I guess that blog post went way over most people's head.
Im not sarcastic. Valve never did such thing.
Beef is right. They only gave the halo to people who didn't use a 3rd party program to get stuff. Idling has never been penalized, because it's just the same as sitting ingame doing nothing, whereas the punishment was given to those who used external software to modify drop rates etc. EDIT: Beef, the first sentence in that post has the word 'idling' in it.

I guess that blog post went way over most people's head.

Over the next few days we'll be removing all TF2 items that were earned using external idling applications. We're going to adopt a zero tolerance policy for external applications used to manipulate the persistent item system. Due to us not having a policy in place prior to today, this time we're only removing the items earned through cheating the system. Going forward, if we find users using external applications, we'll remove all of their items. If you're interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2's community will be affected by this cleansing process. Meanwhile, everyone who took the moral high road will soon be finding a new hat in their inventory. We've also significantly increased the chance of finding any of the existing hats. We realize there is a high level of demand for items, and we're still working on systems to allow you to find them in new ways (via Trading, and crafting duplicates into desired items). However, we need to draw the line at running external applications.
[editline]02:26PM[/editline] Rate me clocks.
[editline]02:26PM[/editline] Rate me clocks.
My bad, they said "external idling applications". My point is still valid. Valve never did any of the things FuLLMeTaLBiGDaDDY mentioned. Valve never punished idling. Valve punished idling without using TF2 [hence external idling application]
I think idling could be fixed to some extent by having a considerably lower drop rate, but rolls every time you score a point. Aswell as a requirement of at least 4 people on a server and if there are any bots on the server at all, does not roll.
I think idling could be fixed to some extent by having a considerably lower drop rate, but rolls every time you score a point.
That would just give unfair advantages to better players That's the problem with TF2 it's hard to make a class based game both accessible and fair to all levels of skill
sure as hell encourages people to get better at the game.
sure as hell encourages people to get better at the game.
Or you could get 4 friends to play with you and kill each other in turns
Ive got 96% of the achievements done, and I actually EARNED all the milestones, so no one can bitch at me for idling, I do it for the hats. Ive gotten so many items from idling the first page of my backpack is completely filled with scrap metal, besides the four corners which hold my refined, Its great showing it to my friends and making them yell at me for not crafting it.
oh my fuck do you just leave your computer on for weeks on end or something?
I never turn it off. I already have to run the server hunter for tf2stats.net blacklist 24/7... so ya... never close the PC. Electricity is cheap and generated by hydroelectric dams, so I don't feel wasteful ;)

the only real reason (IMO) that people idle is for hats, so its not that much of a game balance problem
my piece of shit laptop can barely play tf2 why not idle while I save up to improve it
For all you idler hater out there, I am gold material for you. I idled for a week collecting metal for a hat. I finally got it today. I crafted it and my very first hat is a Camera Beard. [sp]Alright, I won't post this story anymore. It's getting old.[/sp]
I'm pretty sure this could be solvable by advanced configs.
or tape.
-snip-, Wrong thread. :l
Well, the hats don't improve stats in gameplay, they are just for show, so I think they aren't as bothered for that reason. Also, to stop it, that would have a giant loss in players, because it would fuck up custom content, people would not be getting stuff for crafting as much etc.
I craft the hotrod and the batter together, (never play scout or engy) and i got a wig, im happy cuz i play spy all the time! :)
Congrats, But post it in the v3 hat thread
What? Play the game?
You said not being able to get drops with commands like +forward is on and not moving. Then how the fuck are we supposed to get items normally?
Why do people think we idlers idle 24/7 and choose to do it when we can play It's human nature to want things, even more when they are difficult to obtain.
The only way to stop idlers entirely is to disable custom content Effectively killing one of the main reasons source is so successful
and you can't idle on official maps because ... ?
Drako;21174995']It should be as easy as making a prompt that stops players from setting up servers with "Achievement", or letters that correspond to the letters in achievement, in their map name/server name. It just seems silly, but why has Valve completely ignored idlers?
Cat meet mouse. Seriously the worst solution I've read yet.
Why do people think we idlers idle 24/7 and choose to do it when we can play It's human nature to want things, even more when they are difficult to obtain.
Since getting a hat requires luck (which most, including me, don't have) or massive amounts of time (most people don't have this either), and everyone wants a hat (especially since Valve keeps adding new ones) , the solution was idling. It still is.
Even without the random drop system, there are still many ways to abuse the system and cheat. For example, achievement unlocker programs, and servers that give you all achievements when you join. Also, the only reason I idle is because I am absolutely annoyed by the fact that some weapons can only earned from idling.
Sad thing is, what if this is the reason we haven't gotten trading yet? Can you imagine all the retards who will BUY hats off of Craigslist/eBay? Rate me dumb for that all you want, but you know it's a distinct possibility. I mean hell, DispenserGum's got 10 duplicate hats. There are people who would likely be more than happy to pay $20 for one, so that's like $200 right there.
All Valve really has to do is disable people being able to get drops while not moving, or having any of the commands activated that make you move; such as +attack, +moveleft, +forward, etc.
Fine, I'll put rocks on my keyboard :P
