Well, this is just me, but a hat coloured with paint is worth a scrap or reclaimed at best. In 9 out of 10 cases paint ruins hats.
Though, even without paint the hat still looks silly and unfitting. At best, a low-level hat, like the trophy belt.
Then again, I think all the new hats, bar the bombing run, look dumb, and I'd never trade more than one hat for any. On the steam forums you'd snag 2-3 hats, easily.

The stash and the mining light are my favourite two hats for the soldier and engineer, very much in keeping with their original headgear. I prefer hats that actually fit the classes, as opposed to Indian headgear or a Dr. Seuss hat that have no bearing on the soldier's character whatsoever.

I actually agree with this in a sense, I don't like the fact it's quite unfitting, specially for the soldier.
But the reason I wear it is because I love my Plum-Piller dearly.
If only it was for Pyro or possibly Heavy.
