Use the Homewrecker if the other team has a lot of Spies sapping or Gunslinger Engineers. Use the Third Degree if they have a lot of medics. The Powerjack is great if they don't have a lot of Demoknights or Scouts. The Backscratcher is great if your team has few to no Medics. The Axtingisher is great if you're on a team with a lot of Pyros or you're using the Degreaser. The Sharpened Volcano Fragement is awesome in Melee Only modes and mods, but otherwise loses it's charm. If none of these situations apply, use the Fireaxe. However, I continue to use the Third Degree anyway. It has no drawback and is a straight upgrade. Homewrecker isn't situational for me, it's constantly equipped. In fact, I use it with the Degreaser and Reserve Shooter so I can switch to it as fast as possible, for two reasons. 1. No one likes when an enemy Spy bullies up on you with a Sapper. When I hear those tell-tale words, I whip out the sledge faster than lightning and help my fellow Engy out. 2. I fucking hate minisentries. Like for real. You guys have no idea how much I hate minisentries. And the Homewrecker takes them out in a second. So whenever I see and Gunslinger Engy start to run away and set a minisentry, I say FUCK YOU and slap his shit.

Expect for a couple meatshots while you're distracted and restricted to melee-range. It's the same reason why a lot of Pyros use the axtinguisher wrongly, they use it to get the kill but get themselves into a situation where they're going to get killed easily since they have only a melee weapon out and they're over-extending.

If you go to attack the sentry, then the Engy generally will get a couple of good shots on you, or kills you while you try to take it out. If you try to kill the Engy, then you have the sentry pegging away at you during and after, leaving you with very little, to no health at all after the encounter. With the Homewrecker, and my other weapons, I can pretty much have the sentry gone before he even has a chance to get a shot off, and am at least able to scare him off away from the team and allow them to move up, or at least kill him.
