Updated first post with new infos.
If you're an idler, you're going to find fewer items than you were prior to this change. Sorry. On the bright side, there's less reason to idle, because it won't earn more than players who are playing regularly. It's clear that Valve added in some "Factor" to the drop rate system, besides just being random. They probably added a few things to determine whether someone is idling or not, while not affecting people who are actually playing in the slightest. The people who are deemed as "Idling at the moment" probably get a immensely large gap between the new system's rolls, or something like that. Also, OP, do you have any info on whether any hours played this week prior to the drop change update count towards the limit? I want to play right now, but I'm worried that I have perhaps already hit the limit despite the fact that I have not played yet since the update happened. [editline]04:21PM[/editline]
What I worry is that the week resets are on a specific day,and that day would be like... Monday, so we only had an allocation of a fraction of a week. It would be worse though that what we see now, this drought everyone is having since early morning, is caused by already reaching the WEEKLY limit of 7-8 drops [ugh]
There's a chance that maybe all your hours from the week don't all expire on the same day, but exactly a week after that hour being earned. We also need to investigate how valve said SOME of your left-over hours are rolled over to the next week.

The post actually goes on to say in detail why they AREN'T singling out idlers.
Also, OP, do you have any info on whether any hours played this week prior to the drop change update count towards the limit? A 2 hour dry spell on a steam connected server is pretty solid evidence that you've capped.
I played for 3 hours and got a hat :3 and 2 items
Lucky you my friend. I got 2 items today and I crafted some metal. I like the new system and If Talbain has that luck means we can get hats without playing 4 hours.
idled for an hour. Got nothing. :colbert:

The first is you're going to find fewer items than you were prior to this change, as in, If you idle non-stop for a week, you would get less items than if you idled non-stop for a week before the change. The second is it won't earn more than players who are playing regularly not It will earn less than players who are playing regularly
Idled for 14 minutes. Got another axtinguisher.:colbert:

Played for two hours. Got the most useless item in the game.
Wow, Got a shit ton of stuff
I just launched a blank TF2 account for idling. We'll see if a "clean" account, meaning no hours from previous days, affects anything. If after 24h I still get drops... yay? If not, Valve is cruel... because 15 hours allowance is way way too short.
They should bump it up to at least 20-25. =/
They should bump it up to at least 20-25. =/
TBH I kind of understand/approve that Valve only rewards 10-15 hours of TF2 a week. I bet Robin saw how fat Gabe became because of WoW and thought: "No, not with my community!"
Thanks for this thread, I really needed some information on it, and this has given me all I need. Idling right now. Let's see if I can't get anything. I'm pretty sure I hit my cap though. It will suck if I can't get ANYTHING for a whole entire week.
It's possible that there is also a daily cap. We won't know for a few hours.
It's possible that there is also a daily cap. We won't know for a few hours.
I REALLLYYYYYY hope this is fucking true.
It's possible that there is also a daily cap. We won't know for a few hours.
Hoping and praying for a daily cap. Otherwise, it looks like the well is dry for me and a lot of other players.
"Some of your unused time will rollover to the following week, so if you're an intermittent player you'll also be fine." Very nice little feature no one has apparently taken into account. I would like to see if anyone can come up with an actual percentage of roll over time after we get a few solid weeks of data.
If there really is a daily cap, it was good enough to get me 10 items in one day.
I like the new system, now I have a Homewrecker.
I've only played 2 hours so far, but I found 2 drops in that time. I'm gonna play for an hour a day for a week, then I'm gonna try to idle non stop for about a week. Then I will condense the raw info and post it here.
Nothing in the past two hours. Seeing as how I was getting an item an hour before, I think it's safe to say I'm capped. I'll idle some tomorrow and see what happens.
So how do we get hats now? I dont really understand it completely..
So how do we get hats now? I dont really understand it completely..
Nothing changed about the hats dropping. Also, I'm laughing at the decently-retarded arguments out there. Just because you pass what ever time cap there is doesn't mean you have to stop playing. Remember, you're playing TF2 for the gameplay, not for items/hats If you pass the cap, sure you won't get drops, but that shouldn't be the reason you're playing in the first place
That is true MRT but the main issue I'm having is the fact that those of us who actually play like 20-30 hours a week and just used idle in the off-time are kinda screwed. Because after 8 or so hours I was no longer able to get items. Unless this is a daily system they set in then they really messed up. If its daily I guess that is fine.
After about an hour into playing a bot match I finally got my first 'hat' from a random drop. The Scout's 'Baseball Bill's Sports Shine', somehow my first hat not being a hat at all does not surprise me in the least. Whatever Valve has done, yay. Even without the rather pointless hats I have always enjoyed the 400 plus hours with this game. But at least they seemed to have tweaked something that has perturbed people for a long time.
I've been getting more, I played for a couple hours today and got 3 items.
Great system i just got the chocolate and now i only need sandman.
It'd be annoying if the cap were really weekly instead of daily. Going 6 days without items would be lame.
