If there really is a daily cap, it was good enough to get me 10 items in one day.

It'd be annoying if the cap were really weekly instead of daily. Going 6 days without items would be lame.
It can be a combination.
Example:
Weekly cap - 40 hours
Daily cap - 12 hours
Hence, you can play UP to 12 hours in 1 day, but you cannot exceed 40 hours in a week.
They haven't released any numbers yet, they're still probably editing it into configuration to hundreds of people don't bitch.
Like me.
I just updated that image. It has shiny gradients and has the correct drop intervals this time.
The guy who made this was pulling all the data out of his ass, just so y' know.
I'm on Facepunch too, idiot.
So we have to play for 4 hours and then we have 0.5% chance to get a hat?
I just relaunched my main account. It was stopped after a 12 hour period [i wasnt getting any drops].
15 minutes after relaunching it, I got a drop.
It seems like either there's a daily cap, mixed in with a weekly maximum, or the cap accumulates on a daily basis and the oldest day's hours are cleared out.
Just to tell everyone,I'm pretty sure it's daily cap.
Played for two hours.
Got the most useless item in the game.
You lucky son of a bitch! You got a hat!
I agree with Thundermanz. Here are the results of idling for two days.
04/21/2010 1:23 --------------------- START ---------------------
04/21/2010 1:48 - Flare Gun
04/21/2010 2:22 - Jarate
04/21/2010 3:21 - Huntsman
04/21/2010 4:38 - Jarate
04/21/2010 5:32 - Scottish Resistance
04/21/2010 6:28 - Force-A-Nature
04/21/2010 7:14 - Jarate
04/21/2010 16:13 --------------------- END ---------------------

04/22/2010 2:20 --------------------- START ---------------------
04/22/2010 3:00 - Gunboats
04/22/2010 4:16 - Force-A-Nature
04/22/2010 5:28 - Chargin' Targe
04/22/2010 6:29 - Bonk! Atomic Punch
04/22/2010 7:40 - Cloak and Dagger
04/22/2010 8:17 - Buff Banner
Seems about right.
Getting any precise data is going to be hard.
"Some of your unused time will rollover to the following week, so if you're an intermittent player you'll also be fine."
Meaning that every week any drop rate data we get my be drastically different from past weeks.
If it's a daily cap, then wouldn't that mean you could still idle effectively..to an extent?
Like, each day, for say 10 hours, then turn off, wait until the next day, same again?

If there's indeed a daily cap, couldn't you possibly have a script that would disconnect you after getting say 10 items and reset the counter or something to that effect.
This if it is true, is probably better for idlers, than the old system.
Because, you are guaranteed to get items, rather than the last system which is based on luck.
Well, there was 73 minutes difference between my 2 drops.

If we're looking at daily caps mixed with a weekly maximum then Source Tools isn't dead ;)
I can program it to auto-start on schedule, and once the cap is reached, I'd have it have the PC shutdown/hibernate/sleep.
Even if we only have a vague idea of what the cap looks like, the tasks for Source Tools remain the same, we'll just have to tweak the schedules.
We have yet to see what is the WEEKLY cap. Today is only day 2 of the new drop system, so we'll need to see what sort of drops we get now. If it's anything like the first day, then it's looking good.
Well if it turns out as it's a daily cap, and you can change Source Tools to idle for a certain amount of hours, then exit, idling will be still very alive.
If it's just weekly, then it's a little harder, as you will have to idle less hours each night, in which case, it's probably just easier to play.
But I'll carry on idling to get an idea of the drop rates and such, and see which is the most efficent way of getting hats.

I have a strong feeling that it's both daily and weekly caps.
In the image blow is my "theory".
Information of table:
Weekly allowance: How many hours you still have for getting drops.
Daily cap: Maximum hours in a single day for getting drops
Hours Idled: Hours the user was playing/idling in TF2
Red Cells: When the user exceeds daily cap/weekly allowance.
Orange Cells: Actual hours with valid drops when user exceeded[red cells].
Note: Week 3 has 43 hours for allowance, it's just a mistake.
This is just a theory with a fictitious example

The posts above mine made my post redundant.
played for like 1.5 hours. 0 items.
where the fuck did you guys get so much shit.

1.5 hours is hardly enough time to worry. My current average is one drop per 1:15h.
I got a difference of 77 minutes just now between 2 drops.
so 75 doesn't seem to be the max!
I'm getting items again. There seems to be some sort of Daily Cap then. Hopefully the weekly cap (if there is one) is significantly large.
I get an item about every 1h15mins, that's my average. I couldn't get more than 8 items yesterday, after that I think I hit the cap.. but today I've been able to get more (6), so maybe there is a daily cap afterall.

The 25-75 figure is just where the majority of drops fell.
So, it's pretty much obvious that there seems to be a daily cap, which means idling won't die.

This is weird, look at the intervals...

seems a friend got 116 minutes difference at one time. If this is true than the gap is so big it might as well be just like before, random.

The daily cap is fairly good news

YAY! Now I can get my hat this week hopefully...
