Because the old crates still have paints, descrip-tion and name tags, aswell as giftwrap, all which are atleast a ref+

yeah, but the crates that have nametags, like series 1 are worth a ref by themselves.
if anything, he should have opened only:
Series 9 (just paint, softcaps, and unusuals)
Salvaged Mann Co. Crate (if he had one. make effing bank if he unboxes something god-tier like a Gunslinger)
Strange Demo Crates (aka the only way to get the Schaudenfreude without buying it from the store)
or any strange crate
