Got a solution to crashing at every map change, even with multicore enabled
92 replies, posted
Is this issue only for people with the high quality config? I have TF2 set on max (however, no console commands to boost it higher) with multicore rendering, and TF2 doesn't crash very often, and maps load at a reasonable time.
I just did that. I was surprised as TF2 didn't crash after changing servers.

Fucking great. I've changed some options, added most important things to autoexec and game crashes on MOTD.

Try the SourceTools entire reset thing again
I was plagued by random crashing and post-map-change crashes for over a year. The root of the cause turned out to be Xfire :saddowns:
WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT TO USE THREADING COMMANDS WHEN WE NOW HAVE OFFICIAL SUPPORT THAT WORKS PERFECTLY :argh:
Also mat_software_aa_* sucks

It's useless for TF2 to render more than x (e.g. 60/75) frames per second (if it can EVER manage to do that. ha. :v:) if your monitor's refresh rate is not higher than x hZ.
You're a very angry person. :c

Im not a programmer, and my programming is shit, I'm just creative.
It's your Western European powers coming into play

Then I would have to reconfigure it all over again.
Damn it, I hate wasting time.
it's not a waste of time, I did it in five minutes

Considering long startup times, it might take me much longer.
1. Set -dxlevel 98 -novid.
2. Start game.
3. Turn off game.
4. Remove -dxlevel 98.
5. Start game.
6. Set advanced controls, video, advanced multiplayer settings.
7. Make the autoexec.cfg file.
8. Launch the game again.
I don't know how long might it take, but surely not only five minutes.

I don't think it deletes your binds, I still have all of mine and I didn't remember to redo any of them. If you're that paranoid, just copy config.cfg and all your class.cfg's somewhere else, then back.
As for advanced video and multiplayer settings, just remember what you had. (also remember your mouse sensitivity).

Because it doesn't.

I've got default.
-dxlevel 98.
:colbert:
-dxlevel 98.

Agreed.
It's much easier and safer to edit the registry instead.
I was highlighting the fact that the maximum dxlevel in Source is 95.
It's amazing how much myths the SPUF can spread out there
That happened to me twice I think, since that it never happened to me anymore.. But anyway, if it fixes the crashing, I'll save this thread, very useful :)

I disagree. I have set all of my Source games to Dxlevel 98 in the past via regedit. It doesn't really do anything though, except hurt your FPS and disable motion blur (in Portal, at least). I still have my Ep 1 engine and earlier games set to 98.

You can get DX10 actually, but it fucks up hard.
Namely you render everything including menus at once.

No you can't :colbert:
Direct3D10's DLLs aren't even in the game's folder
Not that I want to argument, but games don't work on dxlevel 98 under XP.

Which is why it fucks up hard, I think.
All I know is someone got DX10 working in TF2, but every menu in TF2 was rendered at once.
Alright, this worked at first, and fixed the crashing problem, but ever since I've restarted my computer, it's been crashing just like usual.
I guess it could be crashing at map change for another reason...

It works on my XP gamer... :what:
But it just seems to break motion blur.

Dunno, it didn't work for me.
Also, motion blur works fine to me.
directx 98 throws you into dxlevel 70, 95 is your highest.
I'm still crashing :(

I would love to post a facepalm image macro but that would get me banned :colbert:
