using the idle program wasn't wrong, since its practically being on a idle server but without the hl2.exe process eating up all your memory and CPU
That's what makes it a cheat, you're basically saying "It doesn't use HL2.exe or Gameoverlayui.exe, but we'll ignore that so it isn't a cheat!" That's exactly what makes this an exploit/cheat.
Idling with the idler does not run hl2.exe, it modifies the steam files to think it's running and connects to a server. You aren't running TF2, Steam only thinks you are. Seems like a cheat/exploit to me.
It never altered any files. It hooked into VALVe's community APIs to tell the community and Steam Cloud services that you are in game. Which is exactly what running the game does. Myth busted.
3D models are rendered as pixels, they aren't physical 3D objects inside your monitor. your argument is invalid
The whole "it's just a virtual hat that doesn't do anything why do you care" argument is kind of strange if you ask me. I idled because fedoras are awesome and I wanted to wear an awesome fedora. Is that so wrong?
That's what makes it a cheat, you're basically saying "It doesn't use HL2.exe or Gameoverlayui.exe, but we'll ignore that so it isn't a cheat!" That's exactly what makes this an exploit/cheat.
As I said above, your argument is that using a different program to do the same thing, and gaining no advantage over those who ran hl2.exe, should result in punishment, simply because VALVE is butthurt that some dude thought of a way to make people not chew up their RAM while idling. If I were VALVE I would reward this guy for being a good programmer. Well maybe not, but you get my point.
How does it improve people's chances over others who were not punished (IE: those who sat in idle servers) I'm sure VALVE could have removed the items of people who connected to servers running achievement_idle. So your argument is basically that VALVE should punish people because they used a different program to do the exact same thing? Tisk Tisk. Valve should be more logical than that. They ARE programmers, and know the unlock system inside out after all.
Yes, but you're not in TF2 legitimately. Hl2.exe isn't running, you can run around and do other things while you collect your items. The "no higher chances" argument is evading the point. I don't view achievement_idle as an exploit or cheat because TF2 is running entirely and you're in a server, but with the idler, TF2 isn't open entirely, and it doesn't use your CPU while you go off onto various websites and do other things. It's circumventing the point of being in-game to get items, because even if you're in the server, you're not in TF2, you're tricking Steam into thinking you are. [/walloftext]

[/walloftext]
OK, I can see where you're coming from and I actually agree. People should have had to play the game to get the items, but you have to admit that people DO have different desires than you, some of them wanted the hats when they saw them on everyone's heads, call it jealousy maybe. Is it not justified? Is it really worth all this shit that got stirred up in the community? [editline]08:37AM[/editline]
No, if you don't mind people going on achivement_idle, then how can you possibly say that using the idler is wrong, you are obviously retarded, and most likely 12. Go away.
He just thinks everyone has either enough time to continuously play until they get everything they want, or they don't give a fuck. He doesn't understand the justification. Also, stop saying "HURF YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID" it doesn't really help the image of the position your taking.
No, idling using the idler, is no different than idling using achivement_idle. idling != cheating, your argument is invalid.
Are you running TF2 when you idle using achievement_idle, and were you running TF2 when you used the idle program.
you are wrong, idling != cheating, your argument is invalid.
http://www.teamfortress.com/ Over the next few days we'll be removing all TF2 items that were earned using external idling applications. We're going to adopt a zero tolerance policy for external applications used to manipulate the persistent item system. Due to us not having a policy in place prior to today, this time we're only removing the items earned through cheating the system. Going forward, if we find users using external applications, we'll remove all of their items. If you're interested, only about 4.5% of the players in TF2's community will be affected by this cleansing process. I'm pretty sure Valve can decide if this counts as cheating or not.
Are you running TF2 when you idle using achievement_idle, and were you running TF2 when you used the idle program.
That's aside the point. It gave the exact same results as idling in game, therefore it didn't add any more of a chance to get items, NOR did it give VALVE the justification to remove people's items. If anything they should have gone after the guy who made it, for tampering with their game/steam cloud/whatever the fuck it connected to.
That's aside the point. That is the point. YOU ARE NOT RUNNING TF2, AND YET YOU ARE GAINING ITEMS FOR TF2.
valve should have made hats easier to get and the idler would never have been made
If anything they should have gone after the guy who made it, for tampering with their game/steam cloud/whatever the fuck it connected to.
Drunken_F00l did nothing wrong. The idler used publicly available Steam APIs, and VALVe's actually working with him for improvements to tf2items.com.

Who gives a damn about one little hat?! All of you idlers just stfu!

I think the thing that must gets on my tits is when the idlers call the non-idlers stuff like "cocksuckers". Hey, it isn't our fault we want to get stuff the legitimate way and/or didn't know about the idler.
I think the thing that must gets on my tits is when the idlers call the non-idlers stuff like "cocksuckers". Hey, it isn't our fault we want to get stuff the legitimate way and/or didn't know about the idler.
The real reason you didn't use the idler.
The real reason you didn't use the idler.
No. I know several people that fully knew about the idler, but didn't use it.
It's not our fault we were given halos. we had no say in the matter. you made us have them now you're having a go at us for it. It's like making a bomb and bitchicn about it when it blows up in your face.
How were they wronging anything? They were running hl2.exe, connected to a server, and idled in there. The only difference being that the game didn't graphically display, and there was a third party program telling you when you got an item.
That's like saying farm bots in World of Warcraft or guild wars are totally fine.
Don't wear it, and you will have your healing privilege returned, ie, it doesn't matter if you have it, if you don't wear it, you get healed.
Bullshit. You're a terrible medic and a terrible player if you don't heal someone because you're so jaded that they have a shiny ring around their head.
That's like saying farm bots in World of Warcraft or guild wars are totally fine.
It won't surprise me if we'll start to see team fortress 2 hats being sold for real money on ebay once the trading system is out.
It won't surprise me if we'll start to see team fortress 2 hats being sold for real money on ebay once the trading system is out.
I never thought about this...

Avatar, that's the icon for that achievement you get for readying an Ubercharge during setup. Edit: It appears I have been Ninja'd. WELL PLAYED, WORTHY ADVERSARY.
