It's a sound effect that's been translated from japanese to english, translating has a tendency to dilute meaning or change it, then again Junji Ito does have some weird sound effects in his works, so who know.s

Incline, and they get slightly smaller as it goes on so you can't push yourself out.

Yes, the author is Junji Ito, Gyo is a bit creepeir imo. Plus it has LAND SHARKS!
