First of all, being a fan of something isn't a fetish, by any meaning of the word. Secondly, he didn't think there would be a universal appeal, he thought it might appeal to others who are fans of both TF2 and MLP. Also, this is the place for any TF2 related mod, regardless of what else the mod is relevant to. Just because it annoys you to see pony-related mods doesn't mean they don't belong here. That's like me saying Quake related mods shouldn't be put on here because I've never played Quake. It's just ridiculous.
