I've never seen Valve act like such dicks over something so stupid.

Sure sure just wait 5 minutes till they build up first. The 1st one was yours.
ah ninja'd
I'll give you an hour to figure out how to tell if the whole tf2 community has used the idling thing.
What does that have to do with anything?
Then why do people still hack on VAC protected servers in Counter-Strike? Just cause they say "Don't cheat" doesn't mean people won't.
You're missing the point entirely. If I knew that the idler was considered a cheat, I wouldn't have used it. If the guy who made the idler knew it was considered a cheat, he would have discontinued it and shut down the server- just like he did after the blog post.
In other words, if they said they didn't want people using the idler, the idler would have no ceased to exist. People couldn't cheat even if they wanted to.

It takes time for them to do stuff, they can't wave a wand and everything is completely done.
Valve isn't acting like dicks, you're all just butt hurt to the point of extreme. Rating me dumb just proves the point.
That's because you weren't a victim, douchebag.

How much time does it take to write a blog post that says "It has come to our attention that some of our players are using third-party idling programs to cheat the unlock system. We'd like these players to know that using these programs is cheating and will be punished."?

It's not as if the idler fit the preconception most of us have of cheats either.

Because writing a blog post detects every member who used the idler (requires coding mate) and makes a model and all that shit.
Dont get all worked up, this proves that they are trolling, youll all feel like idiots in a few weeks when valves gives everyone the halo and (mabye) devil horns. drama brings more players to the game and they could care less about the old players(or else we would all have hats that said what eyar we joined steam or something). just sit back and watch the fight.
Whatever, I still got no respect for halo elitists. You can call me butthurt, but that's how I am.

They didn't necessarily have to have the punishment system in place so long as they made it clear that they intended to punish idlers. It doesn't matter anyway because, as I've already said twice, doing so would have made Drunken_F00l end the idler altogether.
SO if you wear a halo you're elitist?
No one's ever thought that maybe people just like the hat?

Nobody was claiming all halo wearers are elitist, however there are some that will constantly grief and flaunt it as they talk shit into their mics with their little prepubescent voices.

Just to prove I'm not one.

I can still call you a butthurt bastard.
Chet isn't even part of the TF2 team. He probably heard his colleagues complain about all the hat-email :v:

I've never seen that and I don't think you have either.
It would be nice if valve just made the next class update already.
I've never seen that and I don't think you have either.
Yeah you're right I'm lying and making up scenarios in order to prove a point on an internet forum over a trivial matter.
Or maybe I've played in Team Win's shitty server before.
Never again.
I'm not crying about a hat, i'm just really disappointed that my account got flagged for something they didn't have an existing rule for and something they could have stopped shortly after it got started with just a blog post months ago.
I thought Valve, half-the time maybe 75% of the time, were trolls.

It was always against the EULA. They just didn't have a policy for what to do to people who idled. That doesn't mean it wasn't against the rules.
Policy: A plan of action adopted by an individual or social group.
Cheater.
The main problem is the way they decided to handle the idler situation- namely, by waiting several months to say anything and then, after everybody's assumed that they'd have already said something if they didn't approve of the idler, suddenly deeming idlers cheaters.
They didn't suddenly deem anyone anything. Use of the idle program was always against the Steam EULA.
Also, when you use an Aimbot, does VAC warn you before it flags you as a cheater?
No, you're flagged and banned weeks to months later.
You could use an aimbot or other hack for 1.5 seconds in game, and you'd still be flagged just the same.
"Oh, hey, this new aimbot is out that's VAC Proof! Let's use it!"
"Oh, hey, this cool idle program is out that Valve can't detect! Let's use it!"

There are tons of other programs that do the same exact thing- hook into Steam games using Steam APIs- that are perfectly legal and accepted. For example, Ventrillo.
There's a huge fucking difference between the idler and an aimbot and you know it. Aimbots allow you to achieve impossible feats of aim. The idler was the same thing as logging into an achievement_idle server and minimizing TF2, but easier. It didn't confer you any unfair advantages that couldn't be gained in-game.
There was no precedent for anything like the idler, VALVe had no policy on it, and nobody knew what their stance on it was until the blog post.
If you're honestly saying that this drama is preferable to simply making it clear that idling=cheating from the beginning, you are retarded.

Ventrillo doesn't emulate Steam Network Protocols like the idler did. (Which is what's against the EULA)
Hooking into a game is not against the EULA.
Your whole argument is now bullshit.
Have a lovely day.

You completely missed the fucking point. Instead of actually responding to the crux of the issue- the fact that regardless of whether or not we 'should' have known this whole retarded drama could have been avoided- you declare my entire argument invalid based off of a single statement.
And if you're going to take that tact, here's a utility that does emulate a Steam connection, like the idler did, and only makes things you can already do- move and delete stuff from your backpack- slightly easier because you don't have to go in-game. Sound familiar? It should, because the idler only made something you could already do- idle- easier because you don't have to go in-game. VALVe has approved it, despite the fact that it emulates a Steam connection.
