abso-goddamn-lutely hats and unlockables ruined this game and its community
Pyro before the airblast and the enemy-burning sound was added, was nothing but suicide. Let's see what other goodies we have now that we didn't have back then: Movable Engie buildings. Upgradeable dispensers and teleporters. The Sandvich, which by itself made Heavies rely a lot less on constant Medic company. Shitloads of achievements. New ways to put out burning teammates. New gamemodes, new maps, community maps, CTF critboost, cool animations in humiliation, less frequent critical hits (I recall the crit rate having been decreased somewhere along the line), metric fucktons of glitch and bugfixes, and of course dozens of unlock weapons which allow you to try alternative strategies other then the 9 main class playstyles. Oh, we got hats too? How could I forget. No seriously, if you long for the "original" TF2 so much, take a look at the X360 version which is practically THE retail release form, and guess why the TF2 community on the consoles is DEAD.

I personally would've preferred it if Valve made more new gamemodes and new maps than new weapons. Not just rehashes of existing modes, like PLR, but actually new modes, like how Payload and Arena were new.
Solution: Someone go make a server plugin that lets you selectively disallow basically anything (like a tickbox for each unlock) You can go fully vanilla, or mod it and disable things like the scout unlocks etc.
Hampshire heavies have a vanilla / old school server, all unlocks taken away but everything else still present. If you're interested its Server 4. I'd love to go back to old TF2 myself, What i stand to gain from reverting back outweighs what I'd loose by a tonne. No more huntsman, no more jarate, no more dead ringer. All cheap rubbish in my opinion. In fact the only item I'd miss is Milk and that wasn't even made by valve.

If it's a Team Fortress 2 with no hats, no trading, no dueling, no cosmetic unlockables, all the current maps, all the gamemodes and all the weapons, fixes and balances I'd play it.
for some minutes then leave...
depends are we talking permanently or just for a couple days
Oh god, yes. Back in the days when the game was balanced and was about team based gameplay, not buying and trading expensive hats.
If you could go back in time of tf2, a time without (lemme rephrase that) UNLOCKABLE HEADWEAR or robot hands, would you?
bugfixes new maps or guns performance fixes buildings airblast I would
